You had applied for the job, faced the interview and won the battle! Now, it is time to join the workplace with the complete and genuine you. How your first day at work will turn out to be may be a question in your mind that you have already started looking answers for. Here are 15 handy tips that are relevant in the context of present job scenario that is marked by sheer competition and high expectations that may turn into complexities if not handled with a diligent hand. No worries, here we go!

Before Reaching The Office

    • Dress smart

As decent appearance counts at the top of the office behaviour list, it is almost mandatory to dress in a smart manner. To make an indelible impression on your colleagues, it is vital to dress up for your first day at work. This in no way means splurging on make-up or trendy hair-dos. But, being formal, conventional and elegant while presenting yourself as a serious candidate to carry out the duties well.

    • Ditch your lunchbox

Giving your lunchbox some rest at home is a wise idea when you are about to hit the office for the first day. This can simply lend you the freedom to join the team mates/co-recruits for lunch within or without the office premises. Such a gesture sends a message across that you are a sociable person and are willing to adapt to situations that pop up at a short notice.

    • Carry all the essential items in your bag

There are many different essential items for boys and girls that must find a place in your office bag to make the whole day comfortable. Keep your bag ready with a fresh stock of these items only to avoid the last minute run-arounds for the same.

    • Arrange the documents carefully and make sure they are updated

Nothing without it! The important documents such as the marksheets, identity proof, degree certificates and others (as specified in earlier communications by the company) must surely accompany you to the office for a quick perusal by the HR department.

At the Office

    • Punctuality is second to none

You should always observe a thumb rule to never be late to the office at least on the first day! Being punctual equates to being responsible and adequately interested in the job. It is something that your employer keenly observes without your notice and showers the rewards as the brownie points at the time of performance appraisal down the line.

    • Report firstly to the reception

In an unclear state of affairs in addition to the new surroundings, there is absolutely no need to take the initiative and explore the premises at your own. It gives a bad impression that you lack the basic discipline and are a wanderer. Hence, it is always good to report at the reception and wait for the concerned person from the HR department to arrive to meet you.

    • Be ready with your questions to be asked at induction or whenever you get a chance

If the company arranges for an induction session, then the chances are that your queries will be resolved promptly but what if there is no provision for the same. In both the cases, you should be ready with the primary set of questions to learn about the company history, its work policy and the extended thread of related questions. This preparation equips you to sail through easily in a professional manner.

    • Familiarise with the fellow new recruits and/or surroundings

Refrain from branding yourself as a loner at the workplace. Be quick and appropriate to get acquainted with your fellow joinees as well as the basic/accessible surroundings to feel more comfortable in a new setting.

    • Familiarise with the co-workers, seniors

This should preferably be done under the supervision of someone from the HR department who can introduce you to your co-workers and seniors. Come out as a charming personality by greeting everyone with a smile and a quick ‘hello’.

    • Be ready with a plan for ‘downtime’

You will probably find many intervals between several meetings for varying purposes such as orientation, team meeting and others. You must be efficient in managing this ‘downtime’ well if you wish to score high right from the first day. For example – Talk about the experiences of your fellow recruits.

    • Reach your work seat with confidence

This is not the final step but just a start of affairs in a different direction. Do not be in a haste to learn every minute work detail right away as this will lead only to confusion. Strike a balance and be relaxed with the activities.

    • Meet your boss and ask for his guidance

Ask your boss for his inputs about your role in the organisation. This is crucial as this will set the pace for your journey ahead.

    • Observe and ask questions about the work culture

Acquaint with the co-workers while being observant about the work culture of the company. Ask questions about the company without judging the information as per your prejudices. Be open minded and let the judge in you take a back seat at this stage.

    • Enquire about the medical, transportation policy of the company

As medical and transportation facilities form the basis for hassle free survival, it is relevant to enquire about the company policy regarding the same. You can stretch it a bit and find out information about the nearby medical and transportation facilities.

    • Refrain from being aggressive in any manner

It is your first day at work and you are in the role of a learner. Not being friendly and adopting an aggressive attitude at this stage may harm your reputation badly.

Hope this holistic package of tips for your first day at work equips you adequately to face the challenges ahead in a new environment.

Bonus:

Being proactive, alert and sincere in conducting yourself as the day comes always pays the rewards not just in the short term but in the long term as well.
