The aim of this coursework is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply the knowledge acquired in this module, in the context of the real market data. The focus is on creating and managing a portfolio of securities applying various investment strategies.
You have been hired by an investment bank to run its global investment business and as a part of the probation period training you are given £20,000,000 to invest equally into two portfolios, i.e., £10,000,000 in a pension fund and £10,000,000 in a hedge fund. You might wish to describe possible restrictions that might have been placed for each portfolio that might affect your investment strategy.
You have to construct and manage your portfolios as efficiently as possible and as realistically as possible using real data from Bloomberg. The aim is not only to achieve the best results but also to demonstrate that you take the right decision and you understand the relevant theoretical principles related to your portfolio management.
You have to prepare a fifteen minutes presentation at the end of the semester and a comprehensive report of no more than 6 pages. The presentation counts for 10% of the final mark and the report for 90%. You can start your portfolios management at any time you wish but you have to actively manage it for exactly one calendar month and finish at least one week before the presentation. You can consider equity stock in any financial market. In your report you can use Appendixes for data and supporting information but not for substantial part of the discussion and explanations that should be included in the main body of your report.
In your report you should focus on presenting concisely the important aspects of your work as a portfolio manager that matter to potential clients. You should clearly explain your investment strategy, your inclusion and buy and sell decisions and their results.
The presentation should be sharp and precise as pitch to prospective clients. You have time limited to fifteen minutes to present to a large institutional investor and convince them of your knowledge and ability to manage a large portfolio, in the background of the results of your investment decisions and the performance of your portfolios. Use any means of presenting that you believe are appropriate for an effective presentation. It will help if you are well prepared, confident, factual and focused.
Your analysis and discussion may include aspects such as: your investment and trading strategy; the choice of a particular market; its overview and major characteristics; the collection of relevant data and information about the available securities; the styles of security analysis that you have adopted; the justification of your periodic revisions of your portfolio; the effect of your investment decisions on the risk profile of your portfolio and its returns; the comparison of your portfolio to an optimum portfolio; the measurement of your portfolios performance and the evaluation of your performance as a portfolio manager.
You can choose any market available in Bloomberg, but you are only limited to trade equity stock on major exchanges. The clarity of your discussion and the support of your claims and arguments are important elements that will affect the evaluation of your work and performance. Also important are your own interpretation and evaluation
Any and all the references to material used must be properly acknowledged and referenced. Whenever you use information from an original source you have to report this source in the text and give full details of it in the reference list. A list of references at the end of your essay is not enough. If you use actual extract from a source, you should place it in speech quotes or use italics. Your report should not be longer than 6 pages A4 side, excluding references and appendices and using font 12 Times New Roman letter type. It should be typed in a Word document and the page setup should be 1’ (2.5 cm) margin on all sides. Your ability to summarize and focus on the important issues is also assessed and you should not exceed the set limit.
You should hand in your presentation and report on the day and time of the presentation including the appropriate cover sheet. A digital copy of the report should be submitted to Turnitin before the presentation.
The presentation is on Tuesday 10 December 2013.
Your report and the whole work must be your own work. Plagiarism constitutes an examination offence, and when discovered it will render a student liable to the provisions of the University’s Assessment Regulations. Whilst you are expected and encouraged to engage in academic discussion and debate with your peers, you must take care not to breech the rules on plagiarism by; for example, using materials that you find on the internet that you do not properly acknowledge. You should be aware that computer software is now available to check internet sources.
The assignment is assessed on the basis of how well the following major aspects are addressed; how well the specific requirements are fulfilled and how convincing the provided evidence are:
Demonstration of knowledge and clear understanding of the relevant theoretical and empirical literature. Ability to synthesise the ideas and materials contained in the literature in the formation of your own arguments and ideas. Synthesis is about the combination of separate ideas, concepts, hypotheses and theories in order to produce a broader or more specific set of ideas that can explain the issues under consideration better than any of the separate parts can do alone. However, extensive repetition or reproduction of textbook or article discussions should be avoided. In that respect, a relevant critical comment or an original comparison or observation might be more valuable.
Evidence of personal contribution. Your own contribution should be made clear and can be: Critical comments on the existing theoretical or empirical literature; Comments or discussion on the employed data and methodology; Discussion, justification or evaluation of the findings.
The quality of your analysis.
The analysis should be about the testing of assumptions, finding and investigating comparisons, contrasts, similarities, differences and seeking to explain them.
Demonstration of your ability to communicate in writing ideas, concepts and theories in a clear, cogent and simple fashion. Following the recommendations and guidance of the standard academic writing skills textbooks might help you to greatly improve the precision and rigour of your writing. You should allow time to proof read and edit your work before submission.
