I am an architecture student, a student without a name, because, here and now, my name is not important. I think my words represent many students of architecture and that is more important. For more information, I’m in third and, I have to admit, the bug of architecture has already taken over me.

Today, we have received the statement of a new project. And what is it about? Well to realize a museum of contemporary art. Yes, as you hear it. A museum?! The same statement that 10 years ago and that 20 … sad, right? Times change, the crisis turns the system upside down and architecture (and architects) leaves it shaking, but, in the subject of projects, we keep thinking about museums.

As I say, it is now three years of career and thanks to them I have begun to savor the essence of architecture; I see the world differently and, for better or worse, the world sees me differently. Most of you who read this letter will surely be architects and you understand me if I talk about long nights of delivery, teachers with the ego runaway, the plans made by my friends from other schools and, already, do not bother tell me But I do not want to talk about it; Today I want to complain. Yes, milks! complain about the disconnection of the school with reality. The university is like an immense elephant, whose movements are slow, slow, and not recycled in any way. Some will say that the university does not have to be at the expense of the “market”, but this is already a dark brown.

It is also true that, within it, we are lucky to have teachers, especially young people, who treat us with respect and who excite us with their subjects. These, from what they tell us, have one foot inside and one outside; they are awaiting rolls of academic certifications and I do not know what stories. In this way, it is not the best teachers who have the insured position; Surprisingly, at least for me, they are the ones who do the worst. Crazy! The latter live in their ivory tower, immune to reality and crisis, thinking that everything can remain as it was.

Many say that there are plenty of architecture schools and surely they do not lack reason. But it is also true that those of us inside want to have options to be architects. It’s too late to back out, I like that, and a lot. I know there is no work, that society sees us as it sees us, but nobody can stop me from wanting to be an architect; It is my life and it will be forever. Maybe, I’m naive, but that’s what it’s about my age, to think that I can, that we can, change the world. Architecture is a service and I am a server. Something bigger than me is underway and I want to be part of it.

Maybe, many of you stopped dreaming, but it’s not fair that I do not have the right to continue dreaming. Because this is, in spite of everything, a dream race. Found dreams and dreams to find. A better world is possible and architecture has a lot to say in all of it.

It is also true that I am from another generation; I am a digital native. Maybe some of you sound weird, but that’s the way it is. This does not worry me, for me it’s normal, it’s like being blond or dark; What worries me is the digital divide that exists. The great majority of those who make the decisions in any college pass over this reality. They are not interested in understanding that the world has changed and that we, the users of these classrooms, deserve classes adapted to reality. If I wake up tweeting, I communicate from social media with my people, I have a blog where I give the addictions with my obsessions and paranoia and I belong to more than 20 or 30, what do I do, facebook groups; why my professors do not do anything so that all this is integrated into their subjects. Well, to be fair, some do make an effort and assemble a blog of the subject; but … there is so much to do!

How much information available on the network that would increase my knowledge to a single click away. The network could be the infinite extension of the limited walls of my classes. There are thousands of possibilities to complete our training, for example, with a simple digital community that will help us to collaborate with each other.

With this, I do not say that the most important thing is the digital environment; none of that, I know perfectly well that the magic of architecture is transmitted face to face, and even better giving me the lessons that the architecture itself, live and direct, gives us. I am aware of this, but hybridizing both worlds is possible and also very cheap, perfect for times of crisis!

However, instead of encouraging us to collaborate with each other, they still strive to teach us how to compete. Elbows and plugs will be our daily bread in the “real world”, but I want a more human world in which synergies are that daily food. So many things … and I’m sure you’ll think so much innocence !!

Even so, I will continue dreaming of a school without teachers up on the stage, releasing plates of two hours without rest. I will continue to dream of teachers who talk to me about the best architecture blogs instead of the bored architecture and others. I will continue dreaming of working as an architect, without necessarily having to be a false self-employed person; if for that I have to go to China, then, much to my regret, I will leave. I will continue dreaming of professors who, besides being good architects, are good teachers and consign enthusiasm even if they talk to me about the limits of Atterberg!

Maybe it’s a lot of dreaming, but if I do not dream, I die.
