I have never seen nature truly turn violent until hurricane Katrina in 2005. I was very young when Nature decided to show us just how powerful she is. Katrina changed my whole perspective on what nature can do. I would never forget the impact it had on my family and me. I quickly learned that nature has its own personality. Katrina showed me that nature is not always kind and forgiving but can be deadly and heartless instead.

I have heard of nature turning for the worst many times but I never really experienced it until hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on New Orleans and even my own home. August 29, 2005 hurricane Katrina touched down in New Orleans Louisiana. I can remember me sitting in my front room surrounded by my family watching the news scramble on the screen. It was pouring at my house and we knew that the power would soon go out. We watched as the houses that my family members once called home, being ripped to shreds by Katerina’s strong winds. I never knew a storm could be so strong to where I made huge building bow to its force. As I watched all I could think about was “oh my gosh”. I had never seen anything like Katrina before in my life. Despite the fact that I was young I knew the seriousness of the storm. Katrina shifted my view of nature from a little wind and rain to a complete force. Nature can be so vicious until it hurts someone emotionally. I learned that when I watched my mom and aunties cry about the things they had lost.

I can recall during the news report and radio my mother and aunties crying. My aunties and their children had lost everything to Katrina. I remember hearing people cry into the night thinking about all the years they put into houses and cars only to see it destroyed in a day. The next day it seemed as if nature had finished her damage. However we were wrong, she was far from finished. The levees in the lower 9th ward broke causing the entire city to flood. Our fear was magnified when we lost contact with a cousin and uncle who were still in the city at the time of the flooding. When just knew that they would be found floating in the water because after all they did stay in the lower 9th ward. They didn’t think that the storm would be that bad. I guess they never knew nature can do what it wants and has its own personality,

Nature seems to be a lot like us. It does what I wants depending on how its feeling. Nature can be so beautiful one minute and totally terrifying the next. I honestly had barley any respect for nature until I learned better. Nature seems to sometimes pay us back for mistreating the earth by destroying what we love. It is sometime like nature saying ‘mess with me I mess with you.’

In conclusion nature has many faces, it can be wonderful but also it can turn for the worst. I believe that nature has to often time change how we look at it for us to understand how to better cherish the things that we are given freely. Nature can impact a person personally if it chooses to do so. We have to respect nature and let it run its course, despite the fact that it can be unforgiving and cold.
