Young millennials in the United States and abroad are experiencing issues breaking into the global workforce and employers do not know of the proper way of tapping into their talent. This study examines the various factors that are present when young college graduates try to enter the workforce but are meet with obstacles, such as a skills gap, lack of networks, and lack of programs that do not transition new employees to preferred jobs of their industry. My research surveyed the population on Linkedin, professional social network and college undergraduate students at City College of New York. Trying to record their responses on their awareness of global youth unemployment what would be the possible solutions.
The definition of global youth unemployment is phenomena that is occurring in the United States and internationally, meaning a majority of millennials are not able to find work. This connects with millennial population because upon graduating college, the assumption is to find but no one educates them of the right way to go about it. However, my overall research question is to understand why global youth unemployment has affected a whole generation and explore the main causes of this phenomenon that has been occurring not only in the United States but internationally as well. There is a disconnect between how the employers are attracting millennials to their organizations and fill jobs that would be considered hard to fill. The impact of my research will address the gap that has arisen between the workforce and the next generation of professionals.
A Foreign Policy article, The new new normal: why bad politics = even worse market by Mohammed El-Erin (2012) prompted me to research further into what causes global youth unemployment. The ideas of this article only scratched the surface because it is not a simple problem to solve. El-Erian states that economic policies, created by politicians do not show any bi-partisan partnership that could help create economic reform that will create jobs in an economy that is endanger of stagnating. The second scholarly journal called New terrain in youth development: the promise of a social justice approach” by Shawn Ginwright and Julio Cammarota (2002). The authors talk about two models called the problem/prevention model and the positive development model that Ginwright and Cammarota created in response to the flawed. They discussed how many cities view urban youth as a problem and come up with intervention that hurt them rather than help them start their career. As a solution, they created the positive development model that mainly focuses on helping the urban youth realize their true potential and have help navigating difficult obstacles. The third source, was the Huffington Post A generation at stake: addressing the global youth unemployment by Christoper J. Nassetta (2016). Nassetta highlights that the reason there is high unemployment rates among the millennial population is that there are a lack of programs that are effectively connecting college graduate to jobs in the labor force. Nassetta stated that countries’ government have accessible resource for global youth unemployment but the issue is multifaceted. The final source, sawa world model: addressing extreme poverty through local solutions and youth empowerment by Debra Flanders Cushing (20140 talks about a possible solution that could address the inattention of many millennials that are being left out of the workforce. The Sawa Model inspires the youth within the community but it has a lot of potential to create self-sustainability. Cushing provides facts that the sawa model was helped create innovative opportunities for youth to be more involved in their communities.
My findings showed evidence of what created global youth unemployment from an unsupportive government to ineffective models that do not produce professional growth. These are factors that are part of the bigger picture in addressing this global phenomenon. All of the authors contributed their findings on what they found on global youth unemployment and they had touched on factors, such as faulty economic reforms, skills gap and lack of professional networks and programs.
This research was conducted by survey and investigated different responses on how people on my LinkedIn network and college undergraduate students felt about global youth unemployment affecting millennials. 62 people from various background from student to professionals had submitted answers to the survey. The survey recorded 9 various answers, opinions, and open ended solutions on how to put an end between the gap of jobs and potential talent. No personal information was collected; the survey was voluntary and anonymous.
The results that I received from my survey was very eye opening because it showed diverse ways to address global youth unemployment. A question in the survey states: “What should the solutions be to help solve global youth unemployment?” and one respondent stated 1) “Workshops in college that provide employment readiness, like resume building and skills building”. 2) “Networking between schools and companies to expose students to industries”. 3) “Increase student motivation”. The survey responses show that many respondents exhibited optimism in fixing the issue and implementing different innovative ways in which the college students would be more prepared for the job market.
My results did not fit into other previous research studies such as the Foreign Policy article with El-Erian, in which most of the blame was put on the government; I believed that many millennials were having a problem with finding jobs I have found that there are potential solutions that could address global youth unemployment specifically in Millennials. Enough funding needs to support and create professional development programs that would instill values of networking, experience, and mentorship. The strengths of my study addresses the problem of global youth unemployment, however, a limitation would of the amounts of responses would be to narrow and not as broad. Unfortunately, the survey was the only way I collected responses because of my limitations as a student. I believe that my findings could lead to follow up research that would be responsible in the creation of policies for professional development worldwide.
