A hero who lives in the heart of many American soldiers and until now, the image of his bravery and fearlessness is still remembered. Within the life in trenches are extremely difficult but this little warrior wasn’t afraid of anything, he fight in total of 17 battles, 4 offensive in 8 months during the World War I in the trenches in France at a position of 26th division. As he approached, he could noticed wounded soldiers in the no man’s land and warned his unit from poison gas attack. With his various actions, he saved the life of numerous soldiers and this is a true incredible story of a friendship between a stray dog and a soldier and that is where the name of “The most decorated war dog of World War I” came from.
We never knew where he came from, but on July 1917, Stubby was found wandering outside of the Yale University campus in New Haven. He was a type of Bull Terrier and Boston Terrier, which is a breed of dog. He appeared while the soldiers of 102nd infantry were training, he hung around Corporal Robert Conroy, a soldier of the unit. This is where their friendship develop. Conroy bring Stubby along with him when their outfit were about to ship out, he hide Stubby under his overcoat when they were getting off the ship in France. Stubby was then exposed by Conroy’s commander. When they were training in the camp, Stubby saluted Conroy’s commander and the officer decided to allow Stubby to be on board. Stubby are then became a part of the 102nd infantry.
Stubby served for the 102nd infantry Regiment for 8 months, with a total of 17 battles, 4 offensive in the trenches in France. He entered the battle on February 5, 1918 at the North of Soissons, Chemin des Dames. They were under constant fire for a month from day to night and in April 1918, during a raid to take Seicheprey by the Germans throwing hand grenade. He was sent back of the trench to heal. Then afterwards, Stubby returned to the front of the trenches and as a result, he has 2 wound stripes. Stubby was injured by mustard gas in the first year of the battle. When he returned after the recover, the soldiers designed him a gas mask to protect him. Beside, he also learned how to locate wounded soldiers in the no man’s land, alert his unit from poison gas attack and hear artillery shell before humans. He was then responsible to capture a German spy that was mapping the layout of the allied trenches to the unit. He was then given a rank for his action. However, when a serious injured by shrapnel, he was sent to the Red Cross hospital for surgery and recover. But once again, he returned to the battle and completely his duty. After the battle, the news of this braverous dog spread to the village of Domremy. Womens of the village made him a coat with his name sewed by hand with the allied flag. The coat were then used as a trademark, where he kept his medals, pins and wore it to the parade for the rest of his life.
After the war, Stubby returns home and met the president of United state in 1921. Stubby then spent his final years beside Conroy, who has rescued him many years ago. Stubby pass away on April 4, 1926, in Conroy’s arm, with a sign of a old dog. Stubby medals were donated to Smithsonian institution and were displayed at the National Red Cross Museum for years. Until now, Stubby image appears in many arts and children books for his loyalty and bravery. A film studio also made an animation adventure film which will be release on April, 2018 based on Stubby life called “Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero”.
Therefore, Stubby deserve to be recognition for his various action, he is no ordinary hero but a true incredible warrior with a courage as strong as steel. Everytime he is hurt or wounded, he would always be ready to return to the battle and complete his mission. In just 8 month serving for the military in the trenches in France, being under constant fire from day to night for more than a month, 2 wounded strips from a throwing hand grenade and has been brought to several surgeries and recover. But as you can see, this dog never going to give up. He might not be a human but he turned from a stray dog to a hero of a country. Stubby ran into grenades and even entered the no man’s land without any hesitant to defend his soldiers. Today, Stubby is the official mascot of the 102 infantry Regiment.
