Role of government in the health Sector

Health is a basic necessity of each and every citizen. The cost of health care has, however, had been high in the recent past as the poor citizens could not afford better health care. A debate on the role of the government in the health sector has been high. Part of the debaters argues that the government has no role in offering money to cater for the health care of each and every person. The liberal-minded persons, on the other hand, holds the government responsible for the health of each and every citizen. This thesis will talk about the reasons unto why the government should take the responsibility to fund the health needs of each and every citizen.

Various factors should be considered while arguing on whether the government should take the health cover of each citizen. A country’s capability when it comes to money should be considered. In cases where the country is rich enough and is funding some sectors such as education, the country should also be in a position to fund healthcare. A learned population is meaningless if it is unhealthy. Before the government think of free education, free medical care should have ticked into their mind. The viability of someone towards medical care also depends on the nature of the citizens. With civilized citizens, the government does not stand a chance to make losses in case it offers free healthcare. The services that are put into place will be used to the maximum and with the conservancy.

A research done by Kinney et al. (810) shows that health for a long time has been the area which most of the government have never invested as much as required. Most of the government expenditure goes towards technology and education. The government has offered free education services to the citizens, but not even a single day have the government thought of making the health care universally free. Medicaid was a program that was aimed at insuring the health of the fewer fortune persons in the society. The question one can ask is how fortune is someone in a community? The discrimination of the rich in the Medicaid program is a big mistake and an abuse to the human nature. Matters that do with health do not consider whether one is rich or poor. Both the social divides require the same healthcare. If the government takes the task of providing the health care for all the citizens, then all people will have the same chance to get medical care wherever they want.

The discrimination that have been between the poor and the rich when it comes to better healthcare will never exist when the government take an incentive to offer medical care to all the citizens. A poor person will feel free to walk into any hospital and demand for medical aid. This will boost the health as everyone will be in a position to acquire a better health care. What this means is that what a poor person need in terms of health is what a wealthy person needs too. The life of the two are important in a country hence none should be neglected.

The economy of each country depends on the health of the citizens. A healthy citizen that is strong will lead to a better and sustainable economy. With the cost of health care for the hike and most of the employers not ready to give health insurance to the employees, the government should get in and offer help. The government is the final destination that helpless people can run to and find help. All citizens and even the government depend on the economy of the country; the health of the citizens which defines the economy should, therefore, be maintained at a higher standard.

An argument will arise, however, when it comes to the private sector. There are those countries where the healthcare is better in the private sectors. The private sectors are there to offer better health services than the public sectors and in return one pays for the services. The services of the private sectors have been praised for being better than those of the public sector. This means that how much the government can agree to offer free medical services in the public hospitals, the services offered will still have to be considered. In a nutshell, the services of the medical care should not just be free, but of quality too.

According to Johnson et al. (59) healthcare is totally different from the open market that is business oriented. In the open market, the focus is to sell as much as possible to maintain a profit as high as possible. However, the principle behind healthcare is to sell as low as possible and to emphasize on less and less treatment. The goal of healthcare is to reach the point that it will be barely needed. The argument in the comparison is an answer to those who would be asking the fates of the private sectors that offer medical aid.

Denying one healthcare means that you deny the particular person the right to live. Right to live is a basic right which everyone should enjoy. In the case where one could not access to better health care due to poverty or any other reason, and then the person is exposed to death. Lack of money should not be a reason unto why one should die. It will sound well to say that a particular person lost his life due to lack of better treatment and not because that person lacked money to go to the hospital. The initiative of making sure that each and every person get better health care lies in the hands of the government.

Universal healthcare will mean a good healthy living of all citizens irrespective of their social status, Korkor et al. (7). One might argue that when the government offer healthcare then most of the people would be more complacent and rely more on the government. The truth is that the free healthcare instead of working negatively towards the government, it will help the citizens. Treatment for the long-term diseases such as cancer and AIDs are always costly. Even the well-off people find it difficult to pay for the treatment of such diseases. Those who suffer from such chronic diseases will have a negative impact on the economy of the dependents and the company such person works for. Households often find themselves in a bankrupt state and on a tight economy rope while treating a patient who suffers such diseases.

Most of the insurance companies are making a profit from the innocent people in the name of health coverage. When an insurance company makes a profit it means that things are not right and that there is someone somewhere who is not getting better services. A lot of money is wasted by people who fund the insurance companies when they think that their health will be covered in return. However, most of the insurance companies have failed to offer assistance in the time of need. Apart from being not in a position to offer better services, most of the insurance companies have also failed totally to compensate some patient. The failure of the insurance companies has therefore left a void that the government should fill.

The government should show modernity where cares for the people. The people who elected the government into power should not be left to suffer in hands of the unscrupulous businessmen who want to make money from the unrecognizing people. The government is responsible, therefore, for the health of the voters. Without the people, there would be no government. The government should be for the people. A government which is mature, modern, and just is, therefore, that which remember its people.

Before the government offer free healthcare, however, the medical infrastructure should be improved on. The government should increase the number of doctors and the number of hospitals that will counter the large number of patients. It will be of no use if one says that the government should pay for the services if the person to offer the services is not around.

In conclusion, it is the responsibility of the government of any country to make sure that the people living in the country is healthy. The only way the government gave make this success is through making healthcare as cheap as possible. The cost of the health care should, however, not be on the expense of the quality offered.
