Pop Art

The pop art movement beginning in the mid-1950s was one of the biggest modern art movements ever, it is considered to have been the art movement that preceded postmodern art. Pop art is often associated with comics, Campbell’s soup can labels, and the famous diptych of Marilyn Monroe. There are any similarities within the pop art world, but also many differences. This will be an analysis of some of the greatest artists of this time and some of their most famous works.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

The first of these two is Roy Lichtenstein, who was responsible for a fairly significant amount of the first comics in the pop art movement. Lichtenstein was born on October the 27th, 1923. He is considered to be the greatest comic artist in the pop art movement, and is considered only second to Andy Warhol in all of pop art culture. Before he became a comic artist, he began his artistic career in the commercial graphic business, but as his work got more and more well known, he started on comics. Probably the most famous comic he ever drew was the Drowning Girl comic which Lichtenstein painted in 1963.

The second of these two artists is Andy Warhol, the most well known pop art artist in the world. When anyone even mentions pop art, it is hard not to think of him. Andy Warhol was born on August the 6th, 1928. Warhol started his career by drawing pictures for advertisements, similarly to Lichtenstein. Warhol was one of the first to adopt the silk screen painting technique, which he used for possibly his most well known piece of work that is considered the symbol of pop art today, the diptych of Marilyn Monroe.

Andy Warhol painted the Marilyn Diptych in 1963, the same year that Roy Lichtenstein painted the Drowning Girl. Both of these artists painted these works with bright colours that catch the eye. The styles, though different, are very symbolic of the pop art culture of the time. They have become some of the most famous pieces of art to have eve been created in that period of time. Even today, when we hear the words pop art, we think of the comics, and of the famous Marilyn Diptych. These works have had a great impact on our culture today. As we look around, we see all sorts of pop art that evolved from this movement. Today in photo booths we often have a setting where we can take pictures that look like the Marilyn Diptych. And all the comic books nowadays have art that has all been obviously somewhat inspired by Lichtenstein’s comics. As Roy Lichtenstein said, “Art doesn’t transform. It just plain forms.”
