I decided to research this topic because it is something that affects my daily life. Have you ever driven down a road and gotten road rage because someone older than forty has forgotten the rules of the road? I know I have. I’ll be driving home on a road with no passing signs on it, and the person in front of me is going ten miles under the speed limit causing me to get road rage. I want to be a law abiding citizen by obeying the signs, but I don’t want to be late for whatever occasion I’m going to. I know I am not the only person who has thought of this as a prominent issue that needs attention. That’s why I chose to write about it. I didn’t have many ideas for a topic other than this one because everyone in the class had such a variety of topics, and I didn’t want to steal one of their ideas. After I decided on it, I had to narrow it down. I needed to choose a specific age when drivers should take physical retests and how often; that was the hardest part. There were many resources I found when I began researching, so it was easy to write about. when I ran key terms through Google, I used phrases such as “elderly drivers”, “elderly driving statistics”, or “driving experience with age”.
With my use of online databases, I had to be specific on what age I chose for the statistics. I aimed for titles that said it was for the elderly drivers otherwise my paper wouldn’t be narrowed down enough. They were very convenient. I knew I hit the jackpot when I found my final resources from sciencedirect.com, USAtoday.com, AOTA.org, and census.gov. Many important articles that could be cited were in these websites and could support my thesis. They were all full of great information, from statistics to theories.
When I was just glancing through sites, I stumbled upon a lot of others. I didn’t take the names of them though. They were useful in a way; they gave me filler information about my topic. I might’ve only learned one or two things from them; whereas, my real sources gave me a great deal of facts to use, but it helped me gain some insight on my topic. My final thesis statement is “Because elderly drivers have slower reaction times and dwindling senses, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) should promote road tests in drivers over the age of 40 and continue them every 5 years.” It’s well formed and sounds important.
For my real cites, I used census, USAtoday, AOTA, and sciencedirect websites. Both census and AOTA gave me driving statistics. USA today and sciencedirect gave me reasons to support my thesis. Census gave me actual numbers and percentages about crashes and fatalities. It supported the point of statistics. A fact I learned was most accidents in people over forty happen when a person is between the ages of forty-five and fifty-four years old. USAToday best supported my thesis sentence, stating that “Baby Boomers… on the nation’s highways over the next two decades has prompted states to launch programs aimed at allowing seniors to keep driving as long as they can without endangering themselves or others.” It then went on telling how different states have enacted new laws for aged drivers. AOTA gave details about Older Driver Safety Awareness Week occuring December 2–6, 2013. ScienceDirect gave me a research paper that made me think in different ways and eased me through the paper.
Some major topic points in my paper could possibly be about how age and senses correlate, what the statistics are for people over the age of forty, under what conditions are they the worst, how physical tests would be beneficial, and if an elderly person takes medication for something, what does that medication do to their driving capabilities. My counter argument would present the facts that taking away a driver’s license could mean that the elderly person is now dependant upon their children or friends. They wouldn’t be able to go anywhere they wanted when they wanted if that other person was busy. There would be a feeling of lack of freedom.
All of the research and preparation for this paper has assured me that I will be able to write and hand in a paper like this, and it’ll be successful. Planning out what sources to use and how to outline ideas into a paragraph was a great time saver when I actually sat down and wrote the paper. Drafting helped me take out some errors that I wouldn’t want in a final paper. When I write research papers in the future, I’ll be able to set it up just like this one and be less stressed about the whole thing.
