Ever since I was a little girl in elementary, I have always looked up to the senior homecoming queen. Whoever won the title was someone to look up to and follow in their footsteps to be successful. When I was about 6 years old, I had the chance to walk on homecoming court to carry the crown for the next queen. When the director announced who won the title of homecoming queen, I still at 17 years old, can remember how her face lit up. She was worthy of being looked up to. All my years, I have gone to every homecoming to see the smartest, most beautiful girl who stood out of all the girls get rewarded for her hard work. I believed that to get homecoming queen, you had to have leadership skills, be academically smart, and be able to get along with everyone.

Growing up in Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD), I have strived to follow that guide to become the 2014- 2015 homecoming queen. Until I started interacting with the wrong set of people during my sophomore year. I was not thinking of my goal; I was thinking that the people who I was socializing with was a bigger priority. Well, two young girls came up to me with the biggest smile on their faces, sat beside me, and told me, “Miss Kathleen, you are our role model! I want to be just like you!” Those little girls made me take a step back out of my own mind and saw that I did not want them to see where my high school life was heading. I only cared about what people thought of me, not about who I wanted to be.
As a result, I started becoming more and more of a leader, focusing on my education. Those girls changed who I was. They reminded me of when I was a little girl, picking a person to look up to. I did not want to be the girl that led them to think that doing wrong is right. For two years, I worked hard to change my ways. I started to be a leader, and my academic went shooting sky high. I was being looked up to by not only from the student at LSD; also the teachers did. Finally, I became homecoming queen of 2014-2015. Now, I know how the Queen I’ve looked up to felt. It feels like our work been rewarded for, and we are doing something right.
