Adolescence is a stage of transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescent girls by the age of 13 years attain puberty. At this stage the adolescent girls attain menarche which is the first menstruation. Dysmenorrhoea means painful menses incapacitating the woman.

It is one of the sign and symptoms of endometriosis. Dysmenorrhea may also be defined as frequent, cramped pain which occurs with menses.

Many studies have been done which shows the prevalence of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls, according to Med India Journal in the year of 2008, dysmenorrhea or painful menstruation occurs in 50% of menstruating women and about 10% are debilitated for 1-3day per month. During the 1st year post menarche 38% of girls developed dysmenorrhea and both in the second and third year post menarche 20% experienced pain in relation to menstruation, lastly about 80% of women with dysmenorrhea do so within 3years of menarche.

Problem statement

Dysmenorrhoea is a painful menstruation which occurs in the majority of the adolescent girls and women, affecting their daily acivities. It can be reduced by doing several effective measures like exercise which will help girls from getting dysmennorhoea. It seems that women who exercise have a reduced incidence of dysmenorrhea. These may be due to exercise related hormonal effects on the lining of the uterus, or increased level of circulating endorphins. It seems that exercise acts as a nonspecific analgesic for short-term relief of pain.

Prevalence of dysmenorrhoea was found to be 72. 7% and was considerably higher in coffee consumers, females with menstruaion duration of -7 or +7 days, and also those who had a positive family history of dysmenorrhoea. However, dysmenorrhoea seems to be the most common gynaecological condition, regardless of age and ethnicity.

Most of the adolescent girls and women are not aware of the correct measures to prevent dysmenorrhea. Pain causes nausea, vomiting, headache, lethargy which can be reduced by performing several exercises where chances of occurrence of dysmenorrhea will be reduced. Since Aerobic exercise is a physical activity of low to high intensity that depends primarily on the aerobic energy-generating process it has various benefits to the adolescent girls. Aerobic exercise increases blood circulation which helps cramps to go away. So this study has been done to evaluate the method of a nonpharmacological research to know the effects of aerobic exercise in dysmenorrhea.

This study has been conducted in different settings in other countries and also in India but it has not been done in Puducherry. Since it have various benefits to the adolescent girls, I would like to take this study.

Expected outcome and application

This study will improve the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding dysmenorrhea and its preventive measures. Aerobic exercise can be given as a teaching program which will help in reducing or prevention of dysmenorrhea among the adolescent girls.
