The engagement of firms in diverse arrays of strategic alliances as a platform for enhancing sustainable competitive growth-venturing has become a ubiquitous phenomenon in today’s hyper-competitive business landscape. Sustainable competitive growth-venturing depicts enterprise socio-economic growth representing a rare, valuable, sticky, and inimitable capability that enables enterprises to be capable of persistently outperforming their rivals . Correspondingly, socio-economics entails how economic activity affects and is shaped by social processes. These developments are not surprising, especially whilst considering the significant utility that engaging in diverse arrays of alliances is likely to confer towards enhancing the sustainable competitive growth-venturing of enterprises. Enhancing the sustainable competitive growth-venturing of enterprises in this regard necessitates for the engagement in diverse arrays of alliances, in order to affirm the long-term economic viability and survival of an enterprise.

As a consequence, most enterprises are engaged in multiple simultaneous alliances with varied partners and are encountering the challenge of building requisite capabilities to manage a diversified portfolio of alliances in the most effective manner. Notably, traditional alliance research that examines the sustainable competitive growth-venturing initiatives of enterprises has predominantly focused on single alliances, however, this predominance is gradually shifting. In this view, alliance researchers have proffered that the alliance portfolio as the unit of analysis in documenting the sustainable competitive growth-venturing initiatives of enterprises indeed raises a slew of new and significant issues that merit further scholarly attention (Chuang et al., 2015; Gulati, 1998; Hashai et al., 2015; Khanna, 1998; Lavie, 2006; Lee et al., 2014; O’Dwyer & Gilmore, 2018; Wassmer, 2016, 2010; Yamakawa et al., 2011).

Most commonly, extant traditional alliance research within the domain of sustainable competitive growth-venturing initiatives of enterprises has predominantly focused on investigating this phenomenon in relation to the formation, governance, evolution, and performance of single alliances (Das & Teng, 2000; Heimeriks et al., 2015; Kohtamäki et al., 2017; Kontinen & Ojala, 2011; Lowik et al., 2012; Meier, 2011; Patel et al., 2016; Suoranta, et al., 2005; Yang et al., 2013). Additionally, the sustainable competitive growth-venturing consequences of enterprises entering into these single types of alliances have received significant research attention Conversely, research focusing on the alliance portfolio level of analysis has comparably received limited attention. This level of analysis within alliance research strives to uncover the issues that emerge from the sustainable competitive growth-venturing initiatives that necessitate enterprises to build requisite capabilities to enable them manage multiple simultaneous alliances, whilst engaging and incorporating varied partners.
