More guns have been drawn on school campuses in recent years than doodles in student’s textbooks. While this statement is attention-grabbing, it is not supported by any evidence or statistics. The author could revise this sentence to something like, "The number of guns brought onto school campuses has increased in recent years, creating a concern about the safety of students and staff." With recent mass shootings gun control has been a looming topic over government offices. The firearm epidemic has moved itself up and should now be considered a public health crisis while also being treated as such. It is unrealistic and unnecessary for America to all together ban guns, however, it does need to take the necessary steps in prevention to save lives. This sentence is contradictory, as the author first claims that a ban on guns is unrealistic and unnecessary but then argues that stricter gun control laws are necessary. The author could revise this sentence to something like, "While a complete ban on guns may be unrealistic, implementing stricter gun control laws is necessary to prevent further tragedies." With the lack of regulations in the United States almost anyone can get a gun without any legal actions taken. Nearly every mass shooter’s record would have prevented them from being within 100 feet of a gun let alone being able to own one.The author needs to provide evidence or statistics to support this claim. Without such evidence, this statement lacks credibility. The author could revise this sentence to something like, "Studies have shown that many mass shooters have a history of red flags that would have prevented them from legally owning a firearm, highlighting the need for stricter gun control laws." However, with no control they were able to walk right up to the gun counter and buy these deadly weapons.
Devin Hughes and Mark Bryant write, “The shooter at Stoneman Douglas High had a long history of red flags that didn't show up in the national database but were well-known to local police. A law that would have required a gun buyer to apply for and get a permit at the discretion of law enforcement could have empowered authorities to deny the shooter access to an AR-15. ” (Hughes, Bryant) No more should have to be said, with mandatory background checks and waiting periods mass shooting rates would significantly decrease. The author does not provide any evidence to support this claim. The author could revise this sentence to something like, "Research has shown that mandatory background checks and waiting periods can help reduce the incidence of mass shootings, making them a necessary component of any comprehensive gun control policy." Almost no one would willing handing a gun to a stranger they know nothing about, however, that is the exact action the American government is promoting with these unregulated laws. Other countries gun laws have introduced the idea that guns should no longer been needed in civilian society. Japan is a prime example of this. 1958 was when Japan official rolled out their regulation laws and since then their society without guns has taken shape. In regards to police shootings journalist Anthony Berteaux states, “The response to violence is never violence, it's always to de-escalate it. ”
Americans could take a lesson from Japan's styles. Despite many peoples beliefs, having a gun in a fight does not automatically stop any potential violence, in fact it could encourage it. In short, other countries have implemented stronger gun regulations and have had strong, life saving results because of it. America as a whole has seemed to shrug aside the seriousness of gun regulations. By implementing stricter gun control laws the United States would be stepping forward in trying to reduce mass shootings. In 2017, there are records of at least 345 mass shootings in America alone. It seems as though, those people running around, guns slung of their back, shouting, “It is our Second Amendment right” choose to not notice that those same guns they are fighting for for “protection” are taking away thousands of lives each year. This Second Amendment they all praise so highly was written in a time where the guns the amendment addresses, were nothing more than a long tube that shot out a pound of burning lead. While it is true that the Second Amendment was written in a different time period, the author needs to provide evidence to support the claim that automatic weapons capable of shooting off 200 bullets a minute were not within the purview of the authors of the Second Amendment. Without such evidence, this claim lacks credibility. The author could revise this sentence to something like, "While the Second Amendment was written in a different time period, it is important to consider the types of weapons available today and whether they should be subject to different regulations than the weapons of the past." Today, we have automatic weapons capable of shooting off 200 bullets a minute. Just like many of our other amendments, there comes a time where it is no longer relevant or effective. Mass shootings have made it a point that guns have lost their sense of protection due to the never ending misuse and loopholes within our gun laws. The time for stricter, more modern gun control laws in the United States has come.
Peoples excuse for condoning these mass murders are getting old.The author could revise this sentence to something like, "The excuses people use to justify these mass murders are becoming tired and ineffective." If it is the Second Amendment that is creating the justification for the lives lost then it is time to amend this amendment. Recent years have brought the realization that gun ownership no longer deters villance nor promotes self defense. While other countries take action and impose new regulation laws Americans still continue to sit on their hands. This must happen no longer now is the time to take action; with more gun control there will be more saved lives.
