Amir is the locked house holding back an egregious secret that could have saved a life. Just as the house was hidden in the trees, Amir’s secret was covered up and not about to come out. Once Amir found out that Hassan, his half brother, has been shot and killed he felt this unforgettable guilt come over him. When they were children Amir and Hassan did not know they were related. “Their next door neighbors saw no harm.” The neighbors, being their father’s friends, thought that not telling them would hide them from shame. “No doubt we spoke.” Even though Amir doubted it in his mind, Hassan and him were close as can be. Hazzara or not, Hassan was always a brother to Amir. “We’ve said love, like a growth, we feed.” Amir and Hassan grew off of each other and taught each other numerous of things. Amir taught Hassan how to read while Hassan indirectly taught Amir what loyalty and friendship truly is.
When Amir saw Hassan getting raped, he started avoiding him. “Hate all we both loved best.” It is sad to say Amir started to dislike the closeness between him and Hassan. He hated seeing Hassan because he had that guilt in him that he could not take. “Maybe we should have known.” If Amir had known Hassan was his brother maybe he would not have been so jealous. Amir was jealous that Hassan was a good kite runner and not him. He thought that Baba would stop noticing Hassan and would start to notice him if he had been a good kite runner. He called the kite “The key to Baba’s heart (Hosseini71).” Maybe if Amir knew Hassan was his brother he would be with him alive and well. Maybe if Amir did not steal the truth from everyone Hassan would be alive. That’s what Amir kept on thinking maybe this maybe that. “Enough is left that I come back sometimes.” Amir’s secret kept on popping up in his head, so when he returned to his homeland, Kabul, he was brought back to that secret he held. It was there where he found his inner peace. After going through a nefarious situation, Amir had this feeling that he was forgiven by Hassan. “Everything we own can burn; we know what counts.” Amir came to learn that his friendship with Hassan was powerful. Everything may be gone from when they were young, but their friendship was always forever.
“We’d watched friends driven to betray; Felt that love drained away.” Amir was the friend that betrayed Hassan which made their relationship fade away. As Amir grew he learned that he had something special. He had a friend, a brother, which was always there for him. Now he turned that into his inner peace.
