I do not feel that his knowledge of fast food or diabetes is properly depicted in his comments or views. There is too much hype on and involvement from individuals writing books and government getting involved in individual’s lives. Personal responsibility has been taken away from the people and authors have made it a quest to line their pockets along with politicians. Insurance companies have lined politician’s pockets in order to insure their fortunes. It should be the individual’s responsibility to learn to cook and research proper meals and proper diets. The government dictates what people should eat and not eat. What has happened to individualism? What gives the government to decide what meals you should eat, yet they allow schools to have soda machines for the kids. People wonder why fast food is so expensive, but do not think about the expense that has been placed on the fast food industry by forcing them to label that the coffee is hot. You mean to say that when we buy a hot cup of coffee that we are anticipating a warm cup of coffee. If that were the case then we would ask for a warm cup of coffee or we would ask for a little ice to cool down the coffee. I disagree with the author saying there were no options for kids to get a good meal other than fast food. In other countries kids are taught to cook and take care of themselves and assist their parents. Why is it that in this country the government has gotten involved in all aspects of our lives?

The sad part is that individuals have allowed this to happen because it is easier to go to Churches Chicken or McDonalds then it is to cook at home. It is convenient to order pizza and sit at home in front of the TV and eat it. How’ve if this is what people choose to do, why the government should dictate to the businesses the type of oil or how to serve the food in a roundabout way. It is not the Golden Arches that has made people obese it is the people that have made themselves obese. I do not agree that fast food is the affordable meal. You can cook for a lot less money at home. The problem is laziness and convenience. Why should the government try to dictate to businesses or pass law to control the size of the drink that you should serve?

Then later in order to make money the hype started on diabetes. “Today’s number it is an unbelievable $100 billion a year.” (Zinczenko, n.d., p.463) It seems that drug companies are making fortunes because the increase of diabetes. If you lower the A1C levels and the standard for diabetes the percentages increase. Who is lining their pockets and it is just something the government is getting involved again. Almost all elderly anymore are said to be diabetic most doctors do not take into account that as you get older things and organs slow down and do not process sugar in the same way they did when they were you. This has been a way for government agencies such as disease control to increase man power, increase government jobs and drive insurance rates higher.

Worse are comments from caring people that make comments such as the labeling of food and trying to dictate the same criteria to small ma and pa restaurants. If this were to happen, how many ma and pa restaurants that have great home cooked food would be out of business.

This writer’s comments are typical of individuals that are not aware of the expense and outcome that would be caused by government interference in these areas. If you are so concerned about the calories consumed when you go out to eat fast food then you should consider the alternative and prepare your own meal at home. If government gets involved in these types of requirements the cost of fast food would rise and the consumer that like fast food would ultimately be the one paying the price.
