Lazy Moon, a pizza joint, that recently opened up by the University of Central Florida campus, and is known for the slices of pizza larger than your face, has become the new fad. Lazy Moon pizza has descended through its ancestors over the years, and is thriving in all the cities it has built. It’s decision to build a location by a college potentially could have been the smartest move Lazy Moon made when choosing to come to Orlando.
Lazy Moon is a restaurant in the hospitality industry that serves all different types of food and beverages, but its main menu item is of course, it’s pizza. The one slice that can fill you up was a mind-blowing concept to most people in the area. On top of only having to order one slice, you can also customize that slice to make it whatever you want. If you want just cheese, you got it. If you want the works, you got it. All on that one slice.
With Lazy Moon not only being a dine-in restaurant, but also a pizza-based restaurant makes it’s competition a little difficult. When you think of pizza, you think of Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Dominos, and mostly just the quick takeout places that always have deals and delivery. Of course, there are those super good Italian restaurants that have pizza, but it’s kind of weird going to a dine-in to pick up pizza, isn’t it? Lazy Moon proceeds to offer a variety of these restaurants best qualities. It is dine-in, but has easy carryout, serves other foods such as salads and calzones, serves alcoholic beverages as well as fountain drinks, and is even open for late for the drunk kids from the bar. This restaurant obviously differs from the one that first opened in the 1620s. Even though it’s 2015, and a different version of the original restaurant, “the mission has always been the same – allow the customer to eat, drink, and be lazy” (A true).
Around the UCF campus area, I would definitely have to say that Pizza Hut and Dominos are two of Lazy Moon’s biggest competitors. Pizza Hut is located down University Boulevard almost to the 417, which to me is a little bit far from campus. Yet of course, Pizza Hut is usually known for delivery. Pizza Hut is one of the biggest pizza brands in the United States, and Lazy Moon didn’t seem to hurt it sales too much. When you pull up the Pizza Hut website, there are deals galore, and a giant, enticing red button that says ‘start your order’. Not only would a giant deal sign on the website grab my attention, but Pizza Hut also has flyers, commercials, and uses any and every marketing strategy to make sure that they are getting the pizza business. If I saw big sign that said “10 new flavors of stuffed crust, large, 1 topping for just $9.99” (Is this), I can tell you right now, I’m going to click on it and probably buy it at some point.
Dominos is even more popular around the UCF area because not only is there a location down Alafaya Trail, there is also a location on campus that you can walk to and/or get it delivered to your dorm or anywhere near UCF. Dominos does just about the same as Pizza Hut when it comes to marketing. Trying to target any and everyone to buy their pizza more than to buy anyone else. When you pull up the Dominoes website, it reads, “online only, 50% off all pizzas at menu price, order now” (Domino’s Home). Who doesn’t want 50% off of their pizza delivery? I know I do. Dominos commercials have even become more popular over the past decade, as Dominos has been on the rise next to Pizza Hut and Papa Johns.
A newer location coming to UCF and hopping on our pizza train is Blaze Pizza. Soon to be open underneath the Plaza Complex on University Boulevard and Alfaya Trail, Blaze Pizza is known for “blazing hot oven + dedicated pizzasmith + 180 seconds = fast-fire’d, perfectly crisp perfection. Sound good?” (About Us). Blaze Pizza is basically going to be the Chipotle of pizza. Who would’ve thought to create something like that? Blaze Pizza has been handing out flyers around campus, and even has a beautiful website. When you pull up the home page, it gives you a list of there soon to be locations so that you can clearly see that they are succeeding in their quick-service pizza business. It also shows pictures from current locations of customers clearly enjoying their pizza. Now if that isn’t a good start to marketing then I don’t know what is.
While these are Lazy Moon’s top competitors, on a normal night most of us still choose to go to Lazy Moon. Now, why is that? Lazy Moon is an I still have to leave the house, order up front and sit down restaurant. But what Lazy Moon has done the best is using segmentation variables for targeting a certain market. Lazy Moon targets the demographic variables the most: a young age group and low-income group (because their not expensive). With market segmentation being almost impossible to please everyone, a restaurant must do a good job at targeting a broad market that will bring in a wide range of customers. Lazy Moon does a great job of this because I am constantly seeing families, adults, college students and a great range of people in the restaurant. Lazy Moon pawns itself as a family friendly restaurant, which also targets the college life. They even market by having nights such as movie nights and bocce ball tournaments. Move nights are geared more towards families. While in bocce ball tournaments, beer is the prize (obviously targeting college students). But who doesn’t love a cheap slice of pizza that could potentially last you two meals? Lazy Moon uses a great positioning strategy of selling cheap pizza, in a cool environment, and that one pizza slice is going to fill your tummy at least until your next meal. This is better than the others positioning strategies who really just try and base it off the cheapest delivery, but then you have to sit at home and eat it.
Lazy Moon is an all around great company that is consistently thriving in the community, especially in Orlando. Lazy Moon offers a great place for our community to just hang out and enjoy some great food, while balling on that college budget. Next time there’s a bocce ball tournament, I’ll see you there!
