Last Friday, the congress sent a bipartisan budget accord to President Obama, which eases the threat of a government shutdown, postpones a destabilizing country default, and spotlights the opportunities and pitfalls formed by our current government. The proposal was approved by the House on Wednesday and by the Senate on Friday, which plans to be shipped to Obama this weekend, for him to sign on Monday. However, there are a majority of republicans in each house, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who oppose this measure, since the package includes spending an average of $40 billion more in each of the next two years, split between domestic programs and defense. Thus said, this is more than the amount of $1.1 trillion the government was already planning on spending. This however, will not result in changes in payments to Medicare and cutting Social Security benefits of disabled workers. That said, the extra dollars will likely be funded by congress to the government to keep government agencies from closing, and the Treasury Department was given permission to borrow money until March 2017. This avoids having a federal default next week. However, both parties did have to compromise in order to pass this budget. Republicans would like to save more money and stop paying taxes towards social security and Medicare, whereas democrats would prefer more spending on these programs and more.
In my opinion, I think that this government spending is necessary for Medicare, but not so much for social security. This is because many economists have predicted that social security benefits may run out at the time all of the so-called baby boomers retire, which would mean that our generation won’t be able to rely on them anyways. Government spending I feel is necessary for Medicare because it helps retired people who have disabilities. I actually have a friend whose dad had Lou Gehrig’s disease and he was going through a very tough times, and now life for him is a challenge because he has some disability. I honestly think however, Planned Parenthood should not be part of the list, since it is not pro-life, but it was obviously needed in order to get signed.
