From examining the informative reading to digesting it’s intellectual meaning, there are various central themes conveyed through the text. This intricate piece of literature expresses the conflict between women’s rights, black women’s rights, and the relationship between gender identities with race identity. In addition, the text underlines the major impact race has on the world and a social structure. For instance, the text touches upon the lack of women’s rights. During the civil rights movement women had minimal rights such as restrictions for voting rights, and had a smaller voice compared to men. When compared to Black women, we learn how they were raped, physically harassed and were put to work along with other hardships of daily life. Hence, the author expresses the minimal rights of women and black women despite their impacts on society and how they help make it work. Despite Race simply being a biological class of identification, it affects the whole world. To further elaborate, race is served as a “metalanguage” and people make judgments. We might act differently in our best interest depending of the race of their audience. However, there are negatives as well because due to white supremacy there is an idea of racial domination among colored people.
Moving on, the author, Mr. Higginbotham mentions Racial Identity whenever defining and identifying genders. This is because racial identification involves social structure. That affects gender identity because it states what rights specific people have and a person’s race will impact a person’s identity. After reading the text, a variety of questions pondered my mind. One crucial question that came into mind is that is it possible to talk about race without including race or vise versa? After explicit analysis, it would be very difficult to talk about gender equalities or sexuality without involving race. This is because race creates the social structure and gender is affected by the social structure. In other words, the rights of a specific human being are also determined by social class race and gender/sexuality. The author also added numerous pieces of intriguing and shocking information as well.
For example, the text shows that black women were not even considered regular women. Therefore, along with the restrictions and limitations of women, black women have even more restrictions and hardships in their daily lives. A black women slave will have to do some similar activates of regular women but also have to work on the fields. Hence, they are treated as machines because they are constantly doing work. In addition, they do not receive unbiased judgments. According to the passage, when an African lady killed her slave owner in self-defense of rape. However, she is convicted as a killer and was hung. Hence, race definitely played a role in determining her sentence. This brings me towards another point that black women do not own their bodies. They are simply property of their masters. Thus, it was ok for a master to put black women through torturous physical labor, rape and sexual abuse them. Slave owners had children with black women slaves and sold their children without any consent of the women. This reading applies to my own life in few ways as well. The idea of racial classification determines social class can be related to today. Some people due to the color of my skin treat me differently because I am classified into a specific social class.
Therefore, I because of my skin color I am treated negatively in some scenarios as well as positively by other races due to my status. After final analysis, this story conveys essential messages with critical points and impactful knowledge.
