One day a girl named Goldilocks was lost deep in the woods, and she couldn’t find her way back home. After wandering in the woods for hours she stumbled upon a small cottage. She walked up to the door and knocked gently. “Hello?” she called. When no one answered, she walked inside cautiously.
Upon entering the cottage, she was met with a delicious scent. Goldilocks searched for the source of the aroma, and, on a table, found three bowls of porridge. After her trek in the woods, she felt awfully hungry, so she decided she would taste just a little of the porridge. She grabbed a spoon lying on the table, dipped it into the first bowl, brought it to her lips, and sipped. “Ouch!” she exclaimed, nearly dropping the spoon. “That’s much too hot.” She stepped over to the second bowl and tried some of its porridge but found that it was too cold for her liking. Finally she tried the porridge in the last bowl and said, “This is just right!” Goldilocks then proceeded to eat all of the porridge in this bowl, because she was so hungry, forgetting she was in someone else’s home. When she had finished her meal, her eyelids were droopy, and she was feeling quite tired, so she looked for a place to sit down. Hers eyes landed on three chairs. She climbed up onto the first chair, but her feet couldn’t reach the floor, and her arms the armrests. “This chair is too big,” she said to herself. So she hopped off and sat in the second chair. Again, this chair was too big for her. Lastly she tried the third chair and found that it was “just right.” She sighed happily and leaned back into the chair. Suddenly, Goldilocks fell to the floor with a thud, a shriek escaping her lips after she had already hit the ground. The chair had broken into pieces under her. Despite this sudden jolt of excitement, Goldilocks was now dreadfully tired, and she walked upstairs in search of the bedroom. At the top of the stairs was a short hallway with a door at the end of it. Opening this door, Goldilocks was relieved to discover three beds. She lay on the first bed but found that it was too hard for her to be able to relax. Tiredly, she stood up and collapsed onto the second, but this bed was much too soft to be comfortable. Finally she lay on the third bed and breathed a soft sigh. “This is just right,” Goldilocks would have said if she hadn’t fallen asleep so quickly.
Much later, a family of three bears came to the cottage: a father, a mother, and a cub. Upon returning home, for this cottage was their home, they discovered that something was different. Unsure of what had changed, they examined their bowls of porridge and found that someone had been eating from them. The bears were outraged that someone would enter their house and consume their food without their consent. The cub was especially angry, for nothing at all was left of his porridge. Next they came across their chairs, one of which was in pieces. Now even angrier, the bears climbed upstairs to see if the intruder was still inside.
They opened the bedroom door slowly, producing a long, loud creak, waking up Goldilocks from her deep sleep. She groggily rubbed her eyes and yawned. Once she was fully awake, she saw three bears beside the bed, glaring over her. Goldilocks couldn’t think of why these bears were mad at her, and then she remembered what she had done.
Rather than face any consequences for her unruly behavior, she sprang up from the covers and ran past the bears, down the hall, down the stairs, and out the front door. She resolved to never go near that cottage again for as long as she lived. She contemplated this as she ran through the forest, recalling the path home.
