Hadfield’s expresses another universal key that can apply to just about anything you do and it squares with my beliefs because it is something everyone should inherently follow. He says that “the effort has to be more deliberate and you’ve got to push yourself, hard, to keep going right to the very end” (Hadfield, Chris. An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth. Pg. 245). I believe this because there have been many times at which I’ve needed to push myself beyond my limits even when I wanted to stop. Following through and testing your limits is how you become stronger and better at the task at hand. It simply is a learning experience.
One thing that I strongly remember from the text is when Hadfield is retelling Yuri’s story. The moment that really stuck out the most was when he says that “by the time Yuri was able to get the hatch closed again, his hands were burning” (Hadfield, Chris. An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth. Pg. 249). There is such an intense amount of imagery during the retelling of this story and this part really gripped my attention. It crazy to think that Yuri and the crew survived this free fall. I thought this was a really cool story nonetheless.
The second thing that I remember from the text is Hadfield’s own self-reflection of his entire career. He explains that conclusion of his career by saying that it was “a fitting end to my career as an astronaut: a rare experience right on the hairy edge of possible, approached with forethought and a sense of purpose” (Hadfield, Chris. An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth. Pg. 251). I thought was extremely deep and gave a stronger insight into what Hadfield is thinking. I thought that it was nice to see how exactly he felt during this time; it demonstrated that he was pleased with how his life has gone and that he can happily have one last mission that would best them all. This moment of reflection happens again later on when Hadfield says that “despite the flurry of activity I felt a need to steal time, to find a way to be alone in this incredible place, physically and mentally” (Hadfield, Chris. An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth. Pg. 253).
I thought this was a valent and beautiful demonstration of Hadfield’s natural emotion. It vibrantly expresses his final mindset and shows us that he wishes to capture the moment in peace and just bask in the glory that he has truly obtained. I think this example of self-expression that we see from Hadfield is in part due to the closing of his career but also the final realization of everything he has done up to this point. It is the true fascination that has allowed Hadfield to embark on the journey to becoming an astronaut that led him down this path. I have this curious nature that begs the question of Hadfield’s emotions in such a prime state of satisfaction.
I imagine he must be filled with an incredible amount of enjoyment yet there has to be this lingering sadness that rocks his very core.
