Advert 1- Female Advertisement

The advertisement that I have chosen which is aimed at females is a tampon advert. One of the main reasons it is aimed at females is because they are the ones that use tampons whereas males do not. The advertisement comes from Kotex, which are advertising the new and improved ‘U Tampons’.

One of the main features of this advertisement is the writing in the middle of the picture. The writing says ‘I tied a tampon to my keyring so my brother wouldn’t take my car. It worked.’ This writing creates a stereotype of what males think about tampons as it is saying that due to the tampon being tied to the keys, it is putting her brother off from taking them. One of the main stereotypes in today’s world is that males do not want anything to do with a female’s period as they find it either ‘weird’ or ‘gross’. When males hear the word ‘period’, most do not want to talk about it as it is something that is foreign to them and is something that is unusual. Most do not understand what a female has to go through on a monthly basis as they don’t want anything to do with it.

This advertisement taps into what males really think about a female’s period and conveys the idea that males don’t want to be associated with a female’s period, which is somewhat true. Another aspect of this advertisement is the setting. The setting shows a girl driving down a road in car on a hot sunny day. It also looks like the girl is quite happy and cheerful. The purpose of this is to show that even while this girl has her period, she is still living her life to the fullest and having fun. Most girls whilst on their period don’t want to participate in normal day to day activities and feel like that they have to worry about leaking and the pain it causes. Some girls even may cancel plans if they have any due to the fear of something bad happening on their period. This advert shows that if you use the new U tampon while on your period, you can live your life happy and to the fullest and not let a period hold you back. It also shows that if you use the U tampons, your period will not hold you back and that you will be able to do normal day to day activities as you would normally do them.

Also, in this advert, there is facts and statistics present which are that ‘40% of people are uncomfortable with tampons.’ The reason as to why facts and statistics are included in this advert is to catch the eye of the viewer of the advert and to get them to really think about what they are reading and what that number means. By putting stats in an advert, it can cause someone to think differently about an item and can even possibly make them buy the item.

Advert 2- Male Advertisement

The advertisement that I have chosen which is aimed at males is a condom advert. One of the main reasons that this advert is aimed at males is because only males use condoms, whereas females do not. The advertisement comes from the company Lifestyles, which are promoting the use of condoms during valentine’s day.

One of the main features of this advertisement is the writing in the middle of the picture. The writing says ‘You shouldn’t go on the ice without your helmet. Just like you shouldn’t go into bed without protection. Never go into contact unprepared.’ The colour of the writing is white, so it can be clearly seen behind the black background. One of the main purposes of this writing in the advert is to get the viewers to think about what they are reading. Lifestyle uses an example, which is hockey, to get the reader thinking about wearing protection on and off the court. By reading this, viewers may be convinced to wear protection in bed if they are possible fans of hockey or even if they play as they can relate to it. Another feature of this advert is the slogan that is present, which is ‘play safe’. This slogan is in red as it is an aggressive colour and can be helpful in conveying a point across. Using the colour red means that the company Lifestyle wants you to be able to see that and to make that the main focus. The font is also bigger then everything else which means that Lifestyle want you to see that above everything else.

One of the main reasons as to why the slogan ‘play safe’ is used is so people can remember the product and can remember the catchphrase. Whenever someone sees the phrase ‘play safe’ they will immediately think of the Lifestyle condom, which means that the business has done its main job in getting the costumer to remember the product. From this, people may think of buying the product and think of using it.

Another aspect of this advertisement is setting. The setting of this advertisement is what looks to be an ice hockey arena. In the picture, we can see an ice hockey helmet, which has been placed on the side of the arena and a black curtain which is closed off the arena. The purpose of this is to not only give support to the example that has been given in the writing of the advertisement, but to also create a background for the text so it can stand out and be seen by the viewer. The black curtain creates a great background for the white text as it stands out and can be seen perfectly. If a viewer was looking at this, the text would be one of the first things that they see as it stands out, which I what Lifestyles were trying to accomplish.
