There are a number of reasons that prompt people to venture into different types of business. Key among the reasons is that people enter into businesses to make profits. There are different types of businesses. They range from sole proprietorship businesses, partnerships, and companies. All these types of businesses have different management structures, which depend on how the business was formed. The case study of Chemplus Inc. has revealed certain gaps in the management of the company. These challenges are seen to run across from the highest office of the company that is with the president of the business, Harry Barlow to, the people he had id the different managerial roles to help him in running the company. The people that Harry has in the different managerial positions to help him are regional managers, sales engineers and technicians who man the different branches that are spread over different parts of the country specifically in Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa Hull and Edmonton areas. Harry has given the managers the authority to make major decisions in regards to operation of the business. However he is always consulted before decisions are made. Consultations in this aspect can be said to be very good managerial practice, however, the fact that the company has managers who are either not well qualified to hold managerial positions, or do not have the relevant managerial experience can be said as the source of the wars of the company. The case study has also shown that the company has employed people, not only based on their academic qualifications but some, based on their experience, and some based on the fact that they are self-taught in their field. All these brought together, have greatly impacted how the company operates, as the company has seen some resentments, that were seen when major appointments were done. This is also seen in the relationship between Marie, and Alex.
The case has also shown that Chemplus Inc is a company that provides the employees with career growth opportunities. This is evidenced by the fact that they prefer internal hiring. Marie was hired as regional manager for the Ottawa Hull office. This is even realised with the fact that most of the employees have a science background. As such they are required to be well versed with the managerial duties and the technical duties.
When Harry decides to promote Alex to the sales positions, he did so for fear of losing him citing that he has been pestering him to join the sales team. He however did not find out why someone who does not have any experience in sales would want so bad to work in the sales department. Had he found this out, he would have learnt that there were underlying issues between him and his manager.
Issues in Chemplus inc.:
1. Falsification of sales reports.
One of the issues that greatly affect the operation of Chemplus inc. is the falsification of sales reports by Alex. The falsification of trip reports speaks volume of the relationship between the management and the supervisee. In the case study, we are told that Marie had initially objected to and advised Mr. Harry against allowing Alex to move to the sales department from the technical department. She sighted her reasons as including that Alex was not cut out for the sales job as he was not really experienced in that area. He was more competent in the technical aspects of the company which involved repairing whatever their clients needed him to fix for them. Reportedly, clients had expressed satisfaction with Alex’s work when it comes to the repairs.
The falsification of the reports and the documents shows that Alexander went to work when he said that he was working. This revelation by Marie, points to a very u big gap that could be ailing Chemplus Inc, not only at the sales department, but in other departments as well. The phone calls that Marie made while she was trying to consolidate the reports, revealed that Alex was not going to work as he was saying he was. He further submitted falsified reporting that he had worked in the field and had had meetings with prospective clients. However when Marie called them. Some of them stated that they had not intended to make purchases as had been indicated in the reports by Alex.
This falsification, made Marie report wrong information and data to Harry since she had stated that it was Like Alex had started learning what was involved in the marketing process and that he was bringing in good reports from the field. Falsifying information made them almost get into bad books. They could have projected expected sales when ion real sense that was not the case.
Chem plus Inc has a problem of staffing. A number of the people working for Chem plus hold positions which they have not had the academic qualification to hold. This is seen in the fact that Marie for example is working as a regional manager, yet there were other staff who were more experienced than her who would have appreciated the promotion. This brought some resentment towards her by some members of staff who believed that the more experienced people deserved chance. Marie did not believe in herself and she was not sure that she could manage an office because she did not have managerial training or experience
This could be one of the reasons that caused Carl Pierre to tender in his resignation. When Marie went to see the president so that they could discuss the prospects of having a replacement for Carl Pierre, the president was shocked since he stated that he thought he had sorted the issue with him and that everything was clear. His statements mean that before resigning, Pierre had raised the issue with the president. This confirms the issue that there were people who were not happy with the appointment of Marie because they believed that there were other people who were more experienced than Marie and who deserved the position.
3. Poor managerial skills
The relationship between managers and their supervisees was wanting. This is seen in the fact that the president told Marie that Alex had been bugging him to leave the technical office and join sales. Despite the fact that Alex has a good reputation among the clients and his fellow colleagues, he did not enjoy working with the technical manager because he thought he was much better than the people he was supervising, especially those who did not have university degrees in their areas. We are told that it did not matter to him whether one excelled in his field, if one did not have a university degree, then he/she was inferior to him.
