A delicate Technique with Intensity in Ansel Adam’s Trees and Snow

Ansel Adam took photographs of trees and snow in order to bring the outdoors to thousands of people around the world. The trees represented winter in the Yosemite Valley Forest in California Adam wanted to inspire thousands of people to feel the intensity and emotions of the subject in his frames, using them as a focal point for the world to see and feel. He once said “Once destroyed, nature’s beauty cannot be repurchased at any price.”(citation)

The photograph (Figure 1) has a strong clarity with details of a forest covered in snow that may be foreign to most. Ansel uses a delicate technique to capture intriguing scenery in Ansel’s “Trees and snow”. His 1933 photographs of “Trees and Snow” were taken by exposing them to high levels of light, thereby capturing the dense, snowy forest and giving the illusion of trees stretched toward the sky. The photograph has a strong clarity of detail of a forest covered in snow and, even though the scene may be foreign to many, the photograph makes you feel as if you were there among the snow and trees. The trees are not full of branches but quite bare with no leaves and with a large amount of white snow that is also a key feature of the photo. The snow is freshly strewn on the ground and caressing the hanging limp branches of the trees. The forest is concaved and endless filling the angle of every frame. Adam uses the clarity of the lens itself to portray the reality of the landscape as one would view it with their own eyes and avoiding the use of programs such as Photoshop or otherwise manipulating the photograph.

Ansel Adam’s took a large number and diverse images using exposure to a lot of light and a delicate technique to capture the beauty of nature around the world. He would snap thousands of images until he would achieve the image that would make people feel the beauty of that specific location. He captured the raw beauty in nature that people could feel by looking at the photograph. All of his images are in black and white and shot different exposures in a way to make people aware of the real world and the environment. Adam had a knack of capturing the right frame to bring emotions to feel the emotions that he himself felt, all in the hope of preserving nature and its beauty,

Adams was a painstaking artist and he was a conservationist who produced thousands of images throughout his life. Adam’s energy and capacity for work were simply colossal. He was a part of the Sierra Club and Wilderness Society colleagues, government bureaucrats, and politicians. For Adams, the environmental issues of particular importance were Yosemite National Park, and the preservations of wilderness. (Citation) He focused on the emotional elements of parks and wilderness and was persistent. Wilderness and the environment were his grand passions. Photography was his passion. Adam’s subject matter was the beauty of America and his instrument was his camera. He was an activist for a cause of the awareness of the wilderness that inspired thousands of people to feel the intensity of emotions of the environment in his frames using them as a focal point for the environment and to bring awareness to preserve America’s beauty.
