Before starting with my topic, we should first understand what is anxiety and what are its different forms or types. The term ‘anxiety’ is defined as a very vague, diffuse, very unpleasant feeling of fear and apprehension. We can not definitely say that anxiety and fear are synonyms for each other. The word ‘fear’ can be defined as a reaction to the present or surrounding threat/ danger, whereas anxiety can be defined as the expectation or tension of an incoming or future danger.

Anxiety can also be stated as a feeling of hyper worry and tension which is not focused on a certain topic or is vast. It is thus an overreaction by an individual to a certain situation. The individual who is anxious may show the following characteristics or behavior:

  1. Rapid heart rate.
  2. Profuse sweating.
  3. Shortness of breath.
  4. Diarrhea.
  5. Loss of appetite.
  6. Fainting.
  7. Dizziness.
  8. Sleeplessness.
  9. Frequent urination.
  10. Tremors.

Anxiety is not always a bad thing. As we know, if we are not anxious or nervous about something, we don’t pay as much attention to the task. What I mean to say is that anxiety somehow helps to improve our performance level and motivate us to do better than others. But when we get anxious beyond the level which is good for us, we end up having anxiety disorders, which are distressing and interfere with our normal functioning of mind and body. There are certain factors that lead the person to develop an anxiety disorders, they can be as follows:

Family history or parental anxiety history may predispose an individual for a high chance of developing an anxiety disorder. A single gene can not bring about a change in a person and make him/ her develop and anxiety disorder. It is always the work for a couple of genes. These genes affect the neurotransmitters, which are the chemical substance released at the nerve endings of a neuron which help in transmitting the messages from one neuron to another. The genes affect the release and quantity of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine and hormones like cortisol which eventually lead to development of anxiety.

Medical Conditions

many medical conditions cause anxiety like asthma, abdominal pain or chest pain, cancer etc. Social anxiety is caused in adolescents or teenagers who have some skin or face dysfunction. Children also develop social anxiety if they have some developmental dysfunction. There are certain organic diseases with symptoms of anxiety, they are

  • Hypo- and hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Low levels of vitamin D, B2, B12, folic acid
  • Gastrointestinal diseases
  • Heart and blood diseases like anemia
  • Brain degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

In substance induced means the anxiety is caused by intoxication, withdrawl or from chronic use of psychoactive substaces like alocohol, tabacco, cannabis, sedatives, opioids, stimulants, hallucinogens and inhalants. People tend to take these substances to decrease their aniety or tensions, but end up getting addicted to them and their anxiety level increases if they are devoid of these drugs.
