Agricultural industry being the largest industry in the world plays a vital role in every economy across the world. The agricultural sector is chiefly responsible for fulfilling humans’ need for energy, and to some extent, shelter. In a broader and truer perspective, it is one of the sources from where, us, earthly beings get the free and very much amiable gifts of nature namely, land, light, air, temperature, rain water, humidity etc. which are totally indispensable for our existence. The horrendous effects of prolonged and intemperate use of chemicals in crop production have started to haunt us from the start of this millennium one can say. Such inappropriate use chemical pesticides and fertilizers have resulted in the unacceptable emergence of human health hazards, pollution of environment and contamination of various underground water sources. Currently, one of the most debated issue is the unyielding battle between those who pursue the use of chemical treatments in varied stages of agricultural production and the group of people who are making an outcry against it and support the sustainable- traditional and environmental friendly methods of farming like organic farming which ensures that no harm is done during the course of production. Thus, to a great extent, the future food security and economic independence of developing countries like especially India would depend on improving the agricultural productivity through the application of sustainable, eco-friendly production methods.

Soil being one of the lively sources that maintain life progression and a key input in attaining food security. Pathogens influence physical condition in plant, leading the agricultural sustainability threats. Chemical fertilizers are identified to kill pathogens and weeds, but have harmful side effects on plant and soil vigor. Some bacteria are associated with roots of crop plants and exert beneficial effects on their hosts and are referred to as Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) (Kloepper and Schroth, 1978). Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria otherwise illustrate the potential to lower the danger of such fertilizers. Rhizobacteria determine role in soil fertility by suppression of pathogens and enhance plant growth. The rhizosphere is the region of maximum microbial activity where the soil micro-organisms reside in bulk to utilize root exudates of that respective crop. The rhizosphere is subject to dramatic changes and the dynamic nature of the rhizosphere creates interactions other soil microorganisms. Well known genera of PGPR includes Agrobacterium, Alcaligenes, Arthrobacter, Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Caulobacter, Chromobacterium, Enterobacter, Erwinia, Flavobacterium, Klebsiella, Micrococcus, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Serratia.

The Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria colonizing the root surface and closely adhering soil interface, the Rhizosphere. Some of the PGPR can also enter root interior and establish endophytic population. Many of them are able to transfer the endodermis barrier, crossing from the root cortex to vascular system, and subsequently thrive in stem, leaves and tuber and other parts. Consequently intimate association between bacteria and host plant can be formed. Offensive PGPR colonization and defensive retension rhizospheree niche are enabled by production of bacterial allelochemicals, including iron–chelating siderophores, antibiotics, biosidal volatize, lytic enzymes, and detoxification enzymes. The PGPR have provided a greater understanding of multiple facets of disease suppression, unique association of non symbiotic endophytic bacteria and apparently a more pronounced growth enhancing effect on host plant. Target plants includes Grapes, Banana, Pomegranate, Guava, Mango, Citrus, Chilly, Tomato, Brinjal, Okra, Tea, Coffee, Plantation crop, Medicinal and Aromatic crops, Cotton, Maize, Paddy, Wheat.
