“The NCAA currently produces nearly $11 Billion in annual revenue from college sports — more than the estimated total league revenues of both the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League” (Edelman). The NCAA is very well known for organizing the athletic programs in many colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, but without the time and effort that the student athletes put into their sport there would be no NCAA. For quite some time the question “Should student athletes be paid ?” have caused some controversy because many people believe they should be paid, while others disagree.
College athletes dedicate so much of their time and energy to their teams, and in return the teams sometimes receive a great deal of money, so the student athletes should be paid.
A full athletic scholarship at an NCAA Division I university is about $65,000 if you enroll at a college with high tuition. The scholarship covers tuition, room, board and books. Scholarships are given to make the athlete choose to go to that school. Scholarships are just a recruitment tactic. They will give you a scholarship as long as you are able to play very well for the school, which will lead to more revenue. It’s all about what you can do for them. Even though, the scholarships cover the cost of tuition, room and board, and books, these athletes still don’t have money for other necessities.Student Athletes are the basic units of the team. Although the success of NCAA tournaments is continuously growing, athletes do not receive any monetary compensation. The main reasons for this according to the NCAA for not paying the athletes are that it wants to maintain its amateur status and that paying the athletes would compromise the integrity of college sports.
NCAA has increased its profits through the sale of merchandise, television rights, and licenses for video games. Athletes play an active role in the promotion of these activities but do not benefit from the profits that are generated. This can be viewed as a form of exploitation and is very unethical. Student athletes deserve financial recognition for the merchandise profit they generate, as well as the opportunity to pursue their own financial gains. On the field every day, the athletes work hard to bring in fans and wins for their school; it is only right that they should be rewarded for their efforts.
