There has been a lot of talk between people about the hypothesis of a world wide human extinction. Some deeply fear it and think it’s a pure nonsense and some crave it thinking that it would be like in the movies. I personally think that the truth is somewhere in between. Deep, deep down we have always been ready for it. In a blink of an eye our primal instinct ins would jump in and save us. But can we really save ourselves? Amidst all the issues we, as the human kind have came up across these past thousand years that have generously been given to us, we cannot help but reflecting upon our society and our way of life. The endless circle of consumption and production is what keeps most of us alive nowadays. Create, spend, procreate, decompose, repeat. Are WE the walking dead? Have we become nothing more than just battery humans? This is a never-ending question that leads us to a discussion that a lot of people deem depressing. However, this is truly a basic question about our essence as the most intelligent animals on Earth.

That brings us to the next question and the logical conclusion would the apocalypse actually do us harm? Or would we benefit from it? At least the solid amount of people that would remain standing to fight for the remains of the humanity of what we used to be would benefit from it. Given the state of affairs worldwide I would safely assume that we would be the same as the walking dead. We would cling on anything that breathes and we would become that feared axe man that slaughters anyone with no moral questions asked. All that just to wake up to one more day of nothingness and gloom. Earthquakes, global pollution, nuclear war, flood, tsunami are all examples of destructive disasters that can and will eventually occur. Yet again, these disasters do not fret us much. They have already happened the human race has survived all of them and it has risen from the ashes many, many times. The one infernal tragedy that we fear the most is becoming animals and turning our back to ourselves. It is easy to fight against another organized imaginary groups of people aka foreign countries because someone else is to blame for these actions. It is equally easy to live through an earthquake or volcano because this is the will of the Mother Nature. But what happens when the imaginary groups seize to exist at all? When the society itself just disappears?

The list of things that could lead to the utter human extinction is ridiculously long but here I would like to focus on the concept of the pandemic theory and the questionable reorganization of human kind. What interests me the most is the hypothetical rise of the walking dead and the disappearance of the human civilization as we know it. There have been many researches on this topic. People are generally interested in things that might bring them to their doom and the possibility of a pandemic came to a high third place on the list. As soon as the social monetary systems fall and crumble people would need a lot of time to come over the initial shock.

Finally you don’t have to pay off your mortgage; there are no long commutes to work and no obligations whatsoever. It almost seems like your life is perfect and then it strikes you what next? Even though we hate to admit we are deeply dependent on our daily plain life and routines. We dislike our jobs and ways of life but when they are gone we crave them deeply. Being occupied with daily tasks is much easier than worrying about the safety of your family and whether you will have drinking water today or no. What will happen when it happens? The long-dreaded apocalypse knocked at your door. What next? Researches show that there are a few waves of annihilation, the first one happens in the next 24 hours after the pandemic is publicly announced to people. The first instinct to all animals in danger is to run so we know that during these initial 24 hours the roads will be jammed. Some people will flee, some will stay stuck in traffic and some will stay home. The ones that stay home actually have the highest chance of survival. Barricading yourselves in, rationing food and getting ready to defend yourselves in case a mindless carcass tries to bite you is the way to go. The chances for your survival gets lower if you are out in the open. During this time the majority of people will get infected. The second annihilation comes after a few weeks when the supplies are spent and you need to leave your home in order to provide for your family. You need to get out into the unknown and survive. This is a breaking point for many people. The place you called your home is no longer your home as soon as you leave the door. Psychologically this is a major setback for anyone in this situation. When you don’t have anywhere to go back to where do you go?
