The article chosen was an editorial published by The Globe and Mail. When opening up their article, the author included a rhetorical question asking readers, how an unqualified individual managed to gain access to a legal gun even though they suffered from a mental illness. While going into more detail about that they pointed out their core argument, which was that way too many people possessed legal guns on them. Because of that, Canada had instantly seen an instant spike in gun violence. While continuing to back up their argument they had included various real-life situations, one of which involved a man named Alexandre Bissonnette. He had failed to include the fact that he was suffering from depression and severe anxiety when applying for a gun license. Upon reading more statistics, they included that Toronto was significantly impacted by the uprising in gun violence, but it was Canada as a whole that was being affected dramatically. While elaborating on that, they had added how more and more guns used in crimes were from Canada. Whether it was legally purchased or illegally purchased, whereas in 2012, 75% of guns used in crimes were purchased in America and smuggled into Canada.

Altogether, they had brought up the point that more and more mentally ill people in Canada possessed a gun when they should not. This is due to the lack of careful selection and security checks upon an applicant. While analyzing the article it had been obvious what the writer’s core argument was. There was no author name but due to the fact that the article was published by The Globe and Mail it automatically made it more credible. This is because The Globe and Mail are known as a credible source. The article was published on July 24, 2018, which was a few months ago making it a recent piece of information. It was straightforward to readers that the author was arguing that Canadians don’t need to have guns on them. In fact, they also argued that the reason more people are getting killed is due to the fact that people can obtain guns so easily. They supported it with various statistics from all over Canada, one of which was from British Columbia. This article was an editorial as stated in the title which made it a little less credible, due to the fact that it was an opinion based article. When explaining our gun laws, the author stated that Trudeau changed the law recently so that any gun license applicants would have to undergo a background check for within five years of the date of application. This showed the author was being reasonable and helped make their argument more credible because they presented evidence to prove the opposing side. There was always a real-life scenario stated or some statistics to back up all of their arguments.

The article definitely could have had a few more details when describing the individual cases and examining the cases in its entirety. For some of the points, there could have been more information to encourage readers and gain a sense of where the author was coming from. An example of this is when the author was talking about British Columbia they could have added a few more details about what was going on and whether anything had changed. Something else to consider is if there were any new gun laws created specifically for that region. The conclusion for the article was precise and tied back to their argument presented in the beginning.

All things considered, the article itself was an amazing source of information and helped further the knowledge of its readers. It was an extremely useful source in regards to figuring out more about Canada’s news and its gun policies and how they have affected Canadians today.
