Everywhere you go, you will see an Atkins friendly menu. Atkins is everywhere. It sounds like the ultimate diet, because you just leave out carbohydrates and eat all you want. The truth is there is more to it than that. This diet isn’t for people who can’t live without carbohydrates; it is for people who won’t miss them so much. The Atkins diet doesn’t leave room for cheaters, but it also isn’t set up to gorge you either. This diet is all about self-control, as is any other diet. The problem with weight gain and weight lose isn’t the type of diet you are on, it is individual eating habits and the amount of exercise you have; it doesn’t matter how much or how little you eat if you don’t exercise.

We can’t sit back and say that it is our parent’s fault that we are over weight, or even that it is the fault of the economy. I live in the state of West Virginia. Here, the obesity level is 23.2% compared to the national average of 20.1%. Is it because nutrition programs aren’t available; because we don’t know about eating healthy; or because exercise was never introduced to us? The answer is no, no and no. All through school we took physical education classes; as a matter of fact it was required to graduate from High School. I can remember the introduction of the “Food Pyramid”. This shows what kinds of foods and how many servings I should eat every day. You know the saying “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”? Well, that applies to anyone who has a problem with obesity. However, I will grant you there are genetic issues that can cause obesity, but they can be dealt with by medication.

The truth is that this society is too busy to make home cooked meals, or too tired, so we have a tendency to just eat out, knowing that fast food means fast pounds. The proof is in the fact that in the 1970’s only 34% of the American food budget was to include eating out. Where as of the late 1990’s it was 47% of the food budget.

Let’s not forget the fact that part of McDonald’s corporate mission is to establish enough outlets, that no American will be more than 5 minutes away from a franchise. Not only are we eating out more, but we are also eating bigger proportions. This is in part of the offering of “super” or “biggie” sizing. Even if our eating habits changed, what is worse is our lack of exercise.

It seems that gyms are popping up everywhere, but that doesn’t mean that people actually go there. I mean, I know I wouldn’t even know how much it costs to join one. Then there is always taking an evening stroll. But who wants to be outside in the heat or cold? What about exercising in the house, well according to a friend, she just doesn’t have time…you know with working 8 hours a day, commuting back and forth to work, picking up kids, making dinner, bathing and putting kids to bed, trying to maintain a home and a marriage (all with the help of her husband), where would she find the time. She could work out on the weekends, but that is her time to relax. She could get up 15 minutes earlier, but she isn’t a morning person. How about exercising after her children are in bed? No, by then she is too tired. What if she tried to do a few exercises during her lunch at work or even take a walk during her break? What’s lunch? What’s a break? The reality of the situation is, we can all find an excuse if we don’t want to exercise.

Exercise is the most important part in maintaining weight and good health, but with the fast paced lives we lead, something is going to be left undone. The last thing we want to leave out is a meal, so we just go through a drive thru and super size it. We all know that we shouldn’t eat this or shouldn’t eat that, or should we exercise. But how many people really do that? I know of very few people that exercise and eat like they should. So, let’s say I have gained a few extra pounds, should I immediately start exercising and watching what I eat? That would be ideal. The truth is it probably isn’t going to happen. Maybe I will just go on a diet instead.

Atkins is a great start, as long as you use control and exercise. It does matter how much you eat, over indulging can bother your body regardless. That much is common sense. You cannot eat tons of food (recommended or not), not exercise, and still expect to lose weight. I know a few people who used Atkins as a stepping-stone in dieting and learned to avoid carbohydrates, but ate sensibly and lost the weight they needed to. The fact of the matter is, it isn’t the diet that is the problem, it is the individual that is on the diet that will create the problem. The whole Atkins diet issue comes down to self-control. Either you have control over what you put in your mouth or you just don’t want to control it. Regardless if you want to lose weight for vanity or health reasons, you must first develop self-control. So, don’t go around blaming your parents, the world you live in, or even a diet plan, just learn self-control and you can solve a lot of your problems.
