Sugar has been a part of our life since the human race are born, we crave for it for energy and stored energy that we use for our daily tasks. However back in the days where sugar is rare our sugar consumption is just right, but now with innovations in science and technology sugar is everywhere. With that said we created a problem where most of humans consume too much sugar that what is needed by the body and anything that is too mush is not healthy, our body would not be able to utilize such excess in sugar mainly fructose. The film “The Sugar Film” gave very accurate and precise data to what would happen to our health if we consume over what is recommended, to cut it short the main character’s health deteriorated and is prone to many illnesses. This Film/Documentary is alarming as for this is already happening to our society. One of the main problem is our ignorance about the issue.
Sugar is easily found on many fruits in which our ancestors use to gain energy. But soon enough the sugarcane was used to turn it into sugar (table sugar or sucrose). It is believed to have originated from a man in Polynesia where it spread to India and was kept secret for economic proposes but in 7th century AD Arabs along with their expansion blew the secret and with the search of Western Europeans for spices sugar become popular and common, but not as common as today.
Production sugar in the Philippines started way before Spanish colonization this happened when the Arabs started trading their goods with the Philippines, but the industry it self started later than that. With this the sugar consumption in the Philippines only grew with years and today our sugar consumption is bound to increase next year (2019) “Philippine sugar consumption would increase by 50,000 metric tons (MT) to 2. 25 million metric tons (MMT) next year, as prices remain soft due to ample supply, according to the latest Global Agricultural Information Network report. ” – BusinessMirror.
Production and consumption of sugar in other countries are also still growing to this date it’s like all countries suffer from the same problem of sugar consumption and regulation. Take note that the averages above are daily consumption average, also note that the recommended sugar consumption stated by American Heart Association (AHA)which clarifies that gender has a role in this in which “Women should take no more than six teaspoons a day or around 20 grams; for men, it’s nine teaspoons maximum or 36 grams. ” Which also may vary depending on your lifestyle.
The key issue as stated in the introduction is our ignorance, we lack awareness in such issues and we don’t have concrete or irrefutable conclusions. But we have data to prove most claims that sugar is not healthy when consumed way above the recommended number of intakes.
The study is conducted based on the assumption that most respondents are either unaware of the whole issue or aware but does not really care too much to look deeply on the contents of what they are eating. The group also assumed that most respondents are unaware about major health risks they can get from overconsumption of sugar. MethodologySamplingThe group used (Convenience or accidental sampling) as their method of sampling in which gave more room for number of respondents and this also helps show how people regardless of their social standing consume sugar and their awareness in the issue.
For collecting the data, the group did the following procedures: (question team pls put the steps how the procedure goes)The groups proposed alternative would not be about something that would replace sugar in food but something that would promote the consumption of sugar in the right way and should be called proposed idea, the idea is the utilization of John Tungku Tregensa idea “Mai Wiru” in our society with this even with sugar being ingrained in the production of most of our foods there will be nutritionist that would inform and educate buyers/consumers what are they consuming and with this awareness and knowledge is going to be our shield to overconsumption and declining health due to sugar along with new technologies such as television and broadcasting this may prove to be useful and easy.
The proposed idea would not interfere with the pursuit of happiness, people’s happiness would still depend on the choices they make in life or choosing what to consume. But armed with knowledge and awareness making the right decision is going to be easier and thus lead to a happier life, with the side effect of being less prone to any sickness and overall just being physically healthy. With health problems out of the way we can say that this idea can lead to Eudaimonia of our human society.
