Real definition of diet: The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. What people think it is: A special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons. Dieting is such a big thing in today’s day and age to the point where if they are not dieting they’ll be starving themselves. This is caused by everyone wanting to look perfect or in other words unrealistic. One of the world’s most famous dieting techniques is the Banting Diet.

This diet is named after the man who discovered it or was the first man to use this method of dieting, William Banting. This is a very controversial topic, everybody has their own opinion about the best way to eat. Besides the Banting worshipers, there are people who believe that all food groups should be eaten, I am one of those people who think that. This is seen by some to be a healthier option because when we use this method of eating we are getting all nutritional value from what we eat. We get protein from meat, which builds our muscles; energy from our carbohydrates; vitamins and minerals from our vegetables and fruit; calcium from our dairy products and fats and oils keep us warm and protect our organs.

In a single Banting meal consists of 2 boiled eggs and 3 rashes of bacon. Breakfast being the most important meal of the day, one would need a meal that can supply the most nutritional value. Egg and bacon might keep you full but it doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. You’d need starch in your diet to give you energy to last you till your next meal which is lunch. There are studies that have shown that Banting doesn’t do anything. It’s doesn’t prove to be healthier or unhealthier than any other ‘diet’.

When one does decides to go on a Banting diet they will be cutting out most forms of carbohydrates and sugars from their daily diet. All that will be eaten are vegetables, meats and fish. These only provide you with a minimal amount of the nutrients’ that we need to sustain a healthy diet. Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy, so when one doesn’t eat carbohydrates their depriving their body from getting energy that is needed. The body will then start to have to find another source of energy to use as fuel. When carbohydrates are not eaten this can lead to weight loss, which can benefit diabetics.

The reason we eat carbohydrates is for energy but there are other reasons why we need them. When we eat carbohydrates it breaks down into simple sugar in our intestines. The sugars that have just been broken down have glucose which absorb and transferred into our bloodstream. Parts of the glucose is used in your brain to make brain tissue for energy. What’s left over from the glucose it is stored in your liver and muscles. Excess carbohydrates will be stored in your body as fat ready to be used later, when exercising for example.

There are also quite a few side effects from not eating carbohydrates that can have an impact on your body. Depending on how you see them these effects can be good and bad. If you look at it from the perspective of someone who is trying to lose weight it could be a good thing. But if you look at it health wise, it can have negative short term effects on your body, otherwise known as ‘side effects’. These can range from headaches, to diarrhoea, constipation, bad breath, muscle cramps and body rashes. And a lot more.

Not everything about Banting is bad, there are a lot of good qualities about it too. After being on a high sugar diet Banting can have good effects on you. It can help stabilise your blood sugar levels and improve diabetes symptoms. As this is a very important factor in the lives of people living with diabetes. Before insulin had been discovered, Banting had been the go-to method of stabilising ones diabetes because carbohydrates have the longest impact on our blood sugar. And the sugar that is found inside carbohydrate caused for blood pressure to increase. If consumed too much or too regularly the blood pressure would spike dangerously high which could be highly dangerous or fatal. Cutting out carbohydrates from their diets would be one of the safest ways to be eating.

Adding avocado, coconut oils and nuts to your daily diet can lessen the chances of getting heart diseases. This is done by the carbohydrates that have been replaced in your body by fat which is consumed. Triglycerides drop in your body (a form of fat that is stored in your body). When people started Banting their vegetable intake increased, due to them not always eating carbohydrates and having to substitute it for something else in their diets. Which in this case it could be substituted for protein which were found in meats like chicken, red meat and even fish. Other substitution could’ve come from fats and lipids by adding avocados and nuts and other healthy fats. Vegetables were one of the biggest and best substitutes for carbohydrates, because in them many thing are found like Minerals and Vitamins. Vegetable contain a wide variety of nutritional values from potatoes being able to provide us with the best kind of carbohydrate but are sadly not eaten in the Banting diet, to carrots offering us Vitamin C and a lot more. The protein intake is very important in this diet because carbohydrates have been slowly cut out until they are completely not eaten.

Having your body adapt to a high fat diet and having it burn fat for energy instead of it burning carbohydrates for energy can cause a lower tolerance for food containing high or a lots of carbohydrates. This causes your blood pressure to rise highly after eating high carbohydrate meal. This is reversible, it’s done by going back to the usual diet which contains at least 150 grams of carbohydrates. Constipation is another side-effect from this highly praised diet. This is due to the lack of carbohydrates and fruit which contain fibre which helps with making your stomach run.

Eating red meat and chicken are one of the main sources of food, but are much harder to digest and not having fibre in your diet can be a problem in this case. So non-meat proteins would be better in this instance, so they can be digested faster and out your body. Even though this diet could be improving your HDL cholesterol levels which can be good, but 50% of the time this diet can be unhealthy because it raises you LDL cholesterol levels. After all everyone’s bodies are different and can react differently to curtain things. Some side-effects that effect one person may not effect another.

The food pyramid was created as a guideline by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for how people should be eating on a daily bases. This was designed for the average person, this pyramid doesn’t exactly mean it was made for every living person, as everyone is different and their daily food/meal requirements can range to be a variety of things. Eating from food can be very beneficial in the way that you’re getting all the food groups and all nutrients needed for your diet.

Breakfast: a bowl of cereal with milk, butter and toast (two slices) and a fruit. This equals to giving us the best value for calories and for our servings. Which are: 1 serving of fruit, 2 servings of dairy, 2 servings of carbohydrate and moderate amount of fat. But that was the old food pyramid, there have been a few changes to it, and the way we should be eating has also changed, that’s how we ended up with all these diets like the Banting diet. In this food pyramid not a lot has changed, except now instead of five food groups there are now six different food groups. Fruit and vegetable have been separated into two different groups. Grains still take up most of the food pyramid, consisting of rice’s, breads, pastas and a lot of others. The vegetable group would be the second biggest consisting of carrots, sweet corn and tomatoes. Then the fruit, milk and meats. Fats and lipids are so easy to miss in this new food pyramid as they say that these should be eaten sparingly, unlike the Banting diet where fats and lipids are considered one of the bases for the diet.

This diet is targeted to people who wish to maintain their health in a good state. It’s not necessarily for people who want to lose weight and be ready for summer time. The best quality of this way of eating is that it’s not necessarily a diet but it is a lifestyle that is going to have a good long term effect on you as a person. This lifestyle of eating ensures that there are no forms of side-effect on your body, because you are getting all that your body is meant to get, all the type of minerals and vitamins. Unlike the Banting diet, where you’re constantly on the watch for what you’re eating and how much you’re eating. Eating this way is easier and there is no need to worry about what you’re eating as much. There are basically no cons to eating this way except for when too much food is consumed at a time which can cause obesity. Also if too little is consumed, this can cause anorexia, an eating disorder.

There is a common problem faced by both diets that is sugar. Sugar causes many problems for you and inside your body. It is also what people try to avoid in their daily diets. Eating too much of this can have many effects on your body, like diabetes. This would then cause one to go Banting diet. This can be beneficial for diabetics, as it lowers the carbohydrate intake which can lower their blood sugar. But there can still be quite a few side effects (as discussed earlier). For someone that doesn’t have and physical health illnesses it could just cause weight loss. Eating all foods from all the food groups will have a better effect on you long and short term, unlike Banting. I support the food choice of eating from all food groups and I personally feel that this choice is better for your health.
