To start with, as in any profession, working as a police officer requires having certain skills and investing in their development. Without it, it is impossible to become a qualified police officer. In this essay, I have considered, in my opinion, the main skills that a modern police officer needs to develop.
If I was currently, a Chief of Police of Sheriff, the communication skills I feel that would need to be improve on in the field and added to a police academy as training would be active listening. Many times, as individuals, we always want to be right and don’t like to be second guessed or feel like we are not doing something right, which results in someone trying to correct us for our benefit. In law enforcement, there is no such thing as a normal call. Officers need the ability to assess and interpret evidence, conclusions and data quickly and efficiently in order to make sound decisions. Officers need to be able to think critically if they are going to help community members solve issues or resolve conflicts. Keen observation abilities are vital. Being able to quickly gage a scenario physically, mentally and emotionally can save your life and other people's lives. Specific people tend to be better investigators because at a moment's notice they can choose tiny but vital information.
I am a firm believer that listening is indeed much more effective and important than talking. You can talk all you want, but if you aren’t paying attention to detail everything you spoke is basically invalid. This does not only apply to police officers; it applies to every single aspect in life. I work for Bob’s Discount furniture, and that was one of the main things we were trained on. You always listen twice and talk once. When we try to convince other people of a stance, listening to them and acknowledging them is vitally important without potentially losing our beliefs. however, when we learn to understand how to establish and maintain a calm and rational state of mind during a general discussion, we can listen to the arguments of other people without their stress and tension being affected. The communication is then transformed from a dispute further into a situation from which we can learn. The issue of having a good dialog goes beyond the ability of people to listen. so it's another serious issue to actually talk about. yet most people don't know how to express their views in a straightforward way. We annoy the other person with unnecessary details, assuming that if we talk more, they will win the conversation.
A written report is often the first impression an officer gives to commanding officers, attorneys, or judges–and a poorly written document may contribute to a misleading representation of the level of competence. It can also mean the difference between a legal conviction and a convicted person's wrongful release. A reliable and intelligent report, on the other hand, will make a positive first impression and can create new possibilities for the future. Initiating any sort of record involves a lot of effective police work. From a single line entry about a minor event to a long detailed forensic report detailing a crime scene, it can be anything. The supervisors of the police officer evaluate the skills of the officer using written reports. The duties of an officer include performing police work within the scope of the law, but they also need to accurately record information about what was done so that all the facts may be available to others who were not present.
The use of verbal communication is to exchange information with other people. It includes speech, or sound. The voice's sound, speed, and pitch can all lead to successful verbal communication. People have developed terms, for example, to represent objects (nouns) and actions (verbs) and to define items (adjectives). Within our environment, we use these words to express our needs, desires and intentions to others. Non-verbal communication is non-verbal or visual communication between people. This includes gestures, facial expressions, movement of the body, timing, touch, etc. that communicate without speaking. For example, if a person has an angry facial expression, exhibits an aggressive attitude, invades the personal space of another person, or inappropriately touches another person, then a confrontation is in sight, even if the verb interaction sounds neutral. Nonverbal signals transcend anything that is verbal.
To summarize, there are few main skills that every police officer should develop nowadays: communication, listening, writing reports and verbal communication. As a police officer on duty, this is crucial not only to save your life, but that of your brothers/sisters/ and innocent people. The smallest detail can make or break an investigation. In every aspect of the criminology career, written communication is vital. Police officers are writing reports; criminologists are releasing recommendations, policy papers and studies; and forensic science technicians are generating their observations and conclusions in writing. Writing is one of the most fundamental skills inside criminology and something so simple such as this can either make or break your career.
