The world of psychology is huge and is rapidly changing today. There are multiple different views we could treat Jake’s anxiety. Behavioral, humanistic, and cognitive approaches could analyze their own different results on the origin of Jake’s anxiety and how it could be treated. Cognitive-behavioral therapies are treatments that attempt to replace irrational cognitions and maladaptive behaviors with more rational cognitions and adaptive behaviors.
Behaviorism focuses on specific problem behaviors and current variables that maintain problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Behaviorists believe that the environment that surrounds the individual affects them. A behavioral specialist would look at Jake’s file to determine if there need to be any changes. With Jake taking harder classes at university, they would most likely suggest forming study groups, finding tutors, or create more effective study habits. This would make Jake have a better understanding of the information he’s receiving in his harder classes. Jake’s stress level would decrease.
The humanistic approach is based on the idea that people are good and want to better themselves. They try to understand the world of their clients through empathy and try to understand their emotions and thoughts. Humanistic psychologists reject psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis was founded by Sigmund Freud that focuses on internal psychological processes of which we’re unaware. A humanistic psychologist would look at Jake’s case and try to understand why he is feeling so anxious. They would put themselves in his shoes to better understand his situation. They would try to understand his thoughts and feelings. They would then hope that by sharing his feelings and realizing that someone empathizes with him Jake can self-realize that he has what it takes to tackle his difficult class schedule. If Jake feels more familiar with his surrounding college environment, he could sense a feeling of belongingness. This, as a result, could leave Jake with a support system and maximize the one afforded to him on campus. Jake will have a more enjoyable college experience.
Cognitive psychologists would not look too deeply into the environment of their patient rather they would look at what is happening inside their client’s mind. They take an interest in the self-talk that people partake in daily. With Jake’s anxiety, they would probably ask him self-reflection questions. For example, what he expects from himself in his courses and if he tells himself he can fulfill those expectations or not. If Jake’s self-talk is negative, the therapist will try to change this mental conversation he’s having to one that has a more positive spin. Having a negative mindset will just make you doubt yourself and have a negative outlook on life. If this works out well, then Jake will feel happier, more confident in his studies, and therefore less anxious.
These three behaviors are all effective in its’ own ways. In summary, behaviorists would focus on the patient's environment. Cognitive specialists would help Jake have a more positive mindset instead of a negative one. Cognitive specialists believe that a patient’s mental talk could affect their emotions. Lastly, humanistic approaches use empathy to make Jake feel better and encourage him to find ways to manage stress.
