Some people think that a vegan diet is healthy because it reduces the risk of several illnesses such as heart conditions, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. However, the argument is controversial and other people believe that vegetarian lifestyle is dangerous for the nutritional balance. I believe a vegan diet does not necessarily mean a healthy lifestyle. Many vegan people are more likely to suffer from iron deficiency, lack of vitamin or mineral and not all vegan foods are good. An adequate iron is necessary for health. Low iron supply may cause anemia and weaken immunity. Most of the iron we need comes from red meat or fish. Only 30% of this iron supply is absorbed by the human body. Vegetables contain iron too, but only 1 to 5% of this iron is absorbed and not enough to support our daily needs. Moreover, according to dieticians, vegetarian diet needs almost twice the daily-recommended amount of iron compared to non-vegetarian.
Another reason why a vegan diet is not as healthy as people think is that it does not provide to human body all the vitamins it needs. We know that zinc is necessary for energy production, management of blood sugar, and immunity. It is mostly found in animal food such as liver or oysters. It is found in vegetarian diet too, but it is poorly absorbed. Zinc deficiency results in weakened immunity, skin lesions, taste, and smell problems that can lead to anorexia. Heath professional advice vegan people to include an adequate amount of vitamin B12 in their diet. Vitamin B12 deficiency may cause serious side effects like nerve damage and depression. Since no plant foods contain vitamin B12, vegan people should be aware of other sources of supply. Some people believe that a vegan diet benefit long-term health.
A Vegan diet has the lower incidence of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Heart disease rate is lower because vegan diets protects from several risk factors such as abdominal obesity, high blood sugar, high blood pressure. However, not all vegan foods are beneficial to health. Most vegan food or meat are usually processed and high in sodium, sugar. Some vegan may raise blood sugar and lead to weight gain and increased risk of chronical disease. A study published in 2017 has shown that people who eat healthy with a little meat are less likely to get heart diseases than people who have a vegetarian diet. Poor quality products, such as refined products and sweetened drinks negate vegan diet protection against heart disease, stroke and diabetes.Being vegan does not necessary means having a balanced diet.
A Vegan diet is healthy because it has a low content of salt and processed food. It may have a huge cardiovascular benefit, helping to prevent heart disease, stroke and reducing the risk of diabetes. As the intake of nutriment like iron, Zinc, calcium is very low in vegan diet, vegan people are likely to suffer of vitamin deficiency. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient to red blood cells and nerve cells function and can only be found in animal product. According to a study of Cornell University, in the long run, vegan diet would make DNA more vulnerable to inflammation which will promote cancer and heart disease.
