The thing that satisfies my soul and helps me achieve self-actualization is arts, be it crafts work, painting or designing How does that contribute to campus diversity? Well, I think I contribute plenty. Diversity goes beyond the race, culture, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and ability. Race or ethnicity might be the first things one thinks of, but really, it is a question of what makes someone the person that he or she is. Diversity might be considered in terms of economic or geographical background, religion, sexual orientation, and even personal interests and general outlook. My love for arts contributes a perspective that completely supports diversity.
The most prominent achievement for me is recognizing my love for arts at a very early age. This has helped me learn so much more about arts and I aimed to pursue my career with arts as I was quite aplomb and wanted to explore my creativity. I started it by attending all the art classes in school and then joined an after school acrylic and oil painting workshop. I learnt the concept of abstract at the workshop followed by how different paints go with different paper and canvases.
In 2010 my love for arts met love for the community. I participated in Art Activity of the campaign “I HAVE A DREAM of a Green, Clean World” organized by Children’s Museum for Peace and Human Rights. This helped me understand global warming and my role in protecting our planet. We worked in teams, cleaned the beaches, made drawings, and worked with oil pastels. My painting was published on one of the posters.
Since then I’ve always tried to contribute as much as i could for the community. I’ve spent time being a RIGHT ON club member which is hosted by CMPHR. I’ve worked with Karachi Down Syndrome Program. Once every month, there’s a parents and doctors conference at KDSP for the parents of kids with down syndrome. Meanwhile the parents are attending the conference KDSP invites volunteers who help take care of the kids and entertain them. I volunteered a few times since October 31st 2015. I volunteered at National Institute of Child Health, for a week; from December 21st to 26th 2015. At NICH I helped kids get involved in activities while they were admitted in the hospital for their treatments I learnt about different medical problems and how kids are always positive and ready to accept any kind of love from anyone. I learnt how a little act of kindness can make your day memorable and blissful. During my A Levels i joined Community Service Society and actively participated throughout the two years. After completing my A Levels I decided to take a gap year and started to work with PeaceNiche at T2F (The Second Floor).
I was hired as an intern on October 23rd 2017 and the first task assigned to me was to update the social media accounts. I was delegated as an assistant publications manager and continued working there for over 4 months. I was assigned with tasks such as regularly updating their calendar, writing a trimonthly newsletter, and under the guidance of social media manager I composed the content for the posts and updated all social networking platforms including sending out messages via Textually and emails via Vertical Response. I was assigned to take down meeting minutes and observe the events; so I actively took part in all the events and activities. I stayed back longer to attend workshops, (Paper Quilling with Benigna Chilas was my favorite) and paid most of my stipend to attend creative workshops (PhoolPatti truck art workshop was the most memorable). My experiences’ contributes a perspective that is a little different from the mainstream.
I continued contributing to the community by working at a school as a teacher. On February 26 2018 i joined Headstart School System as a subject teacher and had the most wonderful 3 months with young teens. Working at Headstart School System Junior High PECHS as mathematics and Digital Learning teacher for grade 6 and 7 helped me develop a firm personality with a softer side that showed up every now and then. All though the young adolescents were chatty and asked out of the world questions but the enthusiastic behaviour of the young learners kept me motivated and interested throughout the term. I contributed my love for arts by making soft boards to decorate the school. My projects were appreciated by the students, teachers, principal and the head office team.
Although a lot of students are engaged in community service but i tried finding and involving arts with community service and learnt a lot with my experiences and all these experiences can help me bring diversity to the campus.
