Incidents of bullying are on the rise over the past few years. A recent study reveals that bullying incidents have been on the increase due to the wide gap in the interaction between parents and their children (Neilsen-Hewett & Bussey, 2017). Bullying is a habitual violent act that can either be oral, relational or physical. Even though many incidents of reported harassment relate to children as victims, it is surprising to note that even adults are victims of the vice. The vice often occurs when a person is repetitively picked by an individual or a team that is more superior according to social standing or physical power. There have been lots of debates and discussions on why people bully others. However, most of the experts and authors argue that bullies are not born but raised. An innocent baby always does not have the behavior of a bully, but with time he or she may become a bully out of the life experiences and how he or she is raised. Bullying is a learned behavior that is utilized in response to stress in an endeavor to attain control or superiority over other people.
As stated before, no one is born a bully. However, the condition and manner in which a baby is raised determine a lot whether he will be a bully or not. Kids that are grown under poor parental relationship usually end up being bullies (Panayiotou, Fanti & Lazarou, 2015). Parents should raise their children well and give them enough attention so that they cannot go out seeking attention from other kids by merely bullying them. Additionally, parents need to be seen with the relationship of their children. Children that are often abused by their siblings tend to think that bullying is the best way of gaining respect from your fellows and thus end up being bullies.
It is essential and advisable for kids to have peer friends. Everyone feels happy and free in the company of his or her peers. Surprisingly, some children may be isolated from their peers. This isolation makes them feel unsupported and not liked, and such kids may end up being bullies to achieve some social control. Low self-esteem may also be a reason for a kid to bully others. Such children usually do not have confidence and are often mocked and marginalized by their parents and siblings.
Additionally, the victims of bullying may also feel guilty and blame themselves thinking that it is their fault. When other risk factors accompany bullying, it often brings the idea of suicide. Risk factors for suicidal thinking include depression, trauma past, and complications at home.
