They really put us in some pressure situations, especially in the first set. There is 9 newcomers on their 2018 roster as they took on No. 8 BYU. “This was a very competitive match. I was really proud of our girls for being able to give ourselves a chance against a top-10 opponent,” head UVU coach Sam Atoa said. “It was just awesome. This was a great environment for our young team to be able to start the season at. There were for sure some nerves, but the girls did a nice job of handling them and I’m proud of how we competed.”
In the first set, the Cougars were lazy on offense which resulted in a high number of hitting errors. The Wolverines match also ended in the closest match of the game. In the second set, BYU pushed to a 11-7 advantage. UVU gained 3 back-to-back points to 16-all. With many kills by each opponent, BYU took the lead and ended the match with a 25-22 score. In the last set, UVU were the first to take control with a score of 10-7. BYU then pushed back ending the score at 12-10. After several rallies, BYU finished the final set with 25-20.
