Texas is the largest state in the United States of America. “Don’t mess with Texas” and Texas: It’s like a whole other country” are just a few of the most commonly heard phrases in describing Texas. Texas is a whole other animal when compared to the other states. It is diverse and will continue to grow in its diversity. Texas needs to stand as one just like the lone star on the Texas flag. I have decided to run for Governor of Texas in the 2020 campaign. This paper will reflect my ideology, the issues that I will be focusing on during my term as the Governor of Texas for the people if I were to be elected, and the plan to raise money for my campaign.
The position I decided to run for is the Governor. I want to lead my state and the governor of Texas is the chief executive of the state. The governor makes policy recommendations that lawmakers in both the state House and Senate chambers may sponsor and introduce as bills. The governor also appoints the Secretary of State, as well as members of boards and commissions who oversee the heads of state agencies and departments. Some of his more important duties are to sign or veto bills passed by the Legislature, serve as commander-in-chief of the state’s military forces, and to convene special sessions of the Legislature for specific purposes (“Duties, Requirements, and Powers”). I feel that this will allow me to take a more active approach in representing my people and push the agenda of the people of Texas towards the federal government to make national changes.
The political ideology I am associated with, I would say I am a combination of both. I have moderate beliefs and can see both sides of complex issues. I plan to push for both major parties to compromise on issues to allow Texas to advance as a state. According to the Saylor Foundation, “the majority of Americans classify themselves as more moderate than liberal or conservative. I feel this is the direction Texas will be going as it grows in its diversity and I will be the pioneer who leads the way for this new America.
The four issues that I will pursue if elected are to reduce the crime rate in Texas, eliminate the open carry sword law, amending the Hazelwood Act to include the cost of books and supplies for our veterans, and work on making Texas a sanctuary state in cities that are not near the border. As far as reducing the crime rate my plan is to increase funds for law enforcement. This would allow law enforcement agencies to increase police patrols to protect the community.
Alleged violent offenders and those accused of domestic violence should not be able to bond out. It has happened far too frequently that a victim has been killed or attacked as punishment for reporting the violence, while the accused has been out on bail awaiting trial or sentencing. For instance, the case of Christopher Scott, an Austin homebuilder who nearly killed his ex-girlfriend after she recanted her accusations against him in a felony case. After she recanted, his bond was lowered. Later the police were called to the residence after Scott had beat her up so badly that her brain was bleeding in four separate areas. The victim was able to crawl out of the house to the driveway where his roommate found her. Just as a murder would not be able to bond out a person accused of domestic violence should not be able to bond out. Crimes of passion are too difficult to determine and can be unpredictable for the victim. Sentences for violent offenders should be increased, to include the death penalty if needed. Petty drug dealers should have lighter sentences to make room in jails and prisons to be able to house the violent offenders and child pornography and sex offenders, which should also receive harsher sentences.
Next, I would focus on amending the open carry sword law to eliminate the open carry of swords and machetes. This law just seems barbaric. As of September. 1 2017, Texas House Bill 1935 allows knives and blades longer than 5 1/2 inches in public. I don’t see the need for someone to walk around with a machete or a sword in a public forum. Texas is a civilized society and I think we need to start acting like it. We all have a right to bear arms and knives do fall in that spectrum, I do not feel that swords and machetes need to be open carried. There is no justification for that and it may lead to unnecessary panic.
Next, I would focus on the veterans of the state of Texas. Currently, the Hazelwood Act provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include books or supply fees. I feel an allowance per semester of $500 for our veterans attending school full-time is needed. According to the National Association of College Stores, the average price of a new textbook increased from $58 in 2012 to $80 in 2016. The average price of a used textbook was $53 in 2012 and $51 in 2016. In four years the price of a new textbook increased by $22, making it likely the cost in 2018 would increase by $16, bringing the cost of a new textbook to $96, multiply that by 4 (classes), bringing the total cost of for the semester to $384 plus the cost of supplies.
Lastly, I will tackle making Texas a sanctuary state. I feel this is a very personal issue but one I feel very strongly about. The general idea is that officials in a “sanctuary” jurisdiction will not go out of their way to help the federal government deport people. One reason for this is to make the state are safer. Becoming a sanctuary state would encourage good relationships between undocumented immigrants and law enforcement. Currently many undocumented immigrants are less likely to report if they were the victim of crime and less likely to report crimes or voluntarily offer information about a crime due to fearing police officers would report their immigration status. If people are afraid the police might ask about immigration status, they will be less likely to report crimes and cooperate with investigations. “Keeping an open channel between all communities and local police improves public safety for everyone. The outcome would be positive: Families would feel safe visiting their health care providers; parents wouldn’t fear sending their children to school and victims of gender-based violence, hate crimes and other violence would feel more able to speak up.
Texas is the Beacon state and I want to ensure it continues that path. I intend to begin raising money for my campaign by letting people know what my stance is on the larger issues. I plan to get office space, phones installed, and begin placing ads almost right away, to include via Spanish channels. I will use the usual methods of fundraising, such as sending some of my volunteers to go door to door visits, spreading my views on certain issues to recruit more volunteers, to gain more constituents, and to raise money. I will also appoint a social media director to gain followers. In the 2016 election, millennials represented nearly 50% of the entire voter population. For this reason, I will also send small teams to larger colleges and universities in the state to educate voters on the importance of voting and knowing they can make a difference in the state’s future. I will also assign positions such as the chair, who will be over all personnel, the treasurer, who will keep track of all donations and expenses, and a secretary, who will keep notes of all meetings and major events.
My overall impression of this project is that it was very informative. It taught me a lot about Texas laws and politics. Although I have always lived in Texas it has shown me that I do not know as much about my state as I should. To be completely honest, I did not know I could open carry a sword which is concerning. This has shown me that I need to become involved in my local community and even my college to make changes. Although, these were just a few of the issues I would focus on, I have firm beliefs and am here for the people. The state needs to come together, and this is the only way we can be a major force. This paper has reflected the major stances I will take if I were to be elected as Governor of Texas.
