One of the 3 principles in the United States Constitution is the system of Checks and Balances. Checks and Balances is the idea/plan that makes all branches equal in power. It is one of the factors that helps keep our government system run smoothly. The system of Checks and Balances limits the powers of the other branches and ensures no branch becomes too powerful. It gives each branch some authority over the other branches and assures the power within the government is kept inbound. Checks and Balances also makes sure that each branch must work with the other.
Each branch has some form of Checks and/or Balances over the other two branches. For example, the most important check the Legislative Branch has for the Executive Branch is impeachment. The Legislative Branch can impeach, or remove, the President from office, which is the most powerful check over the Executive Branch. The House of Representatives vote to impeach the official while the Senate actually tries the case. This may be done if the President seems incapable or bad for the job. Other checks the Legislative Branch has is it must confirm and approve nominations and appointments by the President, which includes Judges, and can propose changes for the Constitution. Congress also controls the budget of the Executive Branch and can impeach officials. Officials that can be impeached are Judges in court and the President.President from the Executive Branch nominates court officials of the Judicial Branch and calls special sessions for Congress.
The President can also veto bills sent from the Legislative Branch. If the President vetoes a bill, Congress has checks that allows them to take another vote and pass the law over the veto if it gets ? of the votes. The President can also grant pardons to offenders, which is a check for the Judicial Branch. The Judicial Branch’s checks are declaring acts of the other two branches to be unconstitutional and reviews Executive orders. If one of the branches does something that goes against the Constitution, the Judicial Branch acts upon it. A balance for the 3 branches is that they all need each other to pass a law; the Legislative Branch sends a bill to the Executive Branch, the Executive Branch approves, then the Judicial Branch must also approve.
The way the Government was made, with the system of Checks and Balances, carries out the principles of the Constitution.
