“People’s minds are changed by observation not argument.” Many millennials have taken action to better the world, whether it be global warming or lack of education. But studies show that many millennials are starting to care more about the future of the planet. Climate change is a big issue that more people should care about because the effects are a lot closer than many people think. Climate change is already starting to affect environments, habitats, and humans. Many millennials are oblivious to the outside world and how our choices affect it. There are those out there fighting the good fight in order to preserve the environment and improve it as well as redeem it from previous generations who destroyed and are currently destroying the environment.
In the article “Shifting Public Opinion on Climate Change” by Robert J. Brulle. In the article Brulle shows the significance of many different environmental news has on people. Brulle conducted 74 different surveys across the United States over a nine-year span in order to get a clear response on how significant media outlets are about raising concern on climate change. Brulle emphasizes that many people tend to not concern themselves with issues in their peripherals. But rather only really take action to more recent events that will affect them. This is one of the main reasons why climate change continues today, because it doesn’t affect people right now but will in the future. Brulle also states that public opinions are influenced by elite cues. Brulle emphasizes that people with higher education tend to pick up more on these cues resulting in action taken. But according to Brulle the general public is affected by the most recent media presentation. Elite cues as well as a person’s ideology is one factor that diminishes the severity of climate change to the general public. Brulle also found that weather patterns also affect public opinion on climate change. With the significant change in weather over the past decades, the general public started to notice. But unfortunately, Brulle also found that these significant changes in weather patterns weren’t enough to grab the attention of the public. Brulle also found that promoted scientific information has a small effect on people but not enough to make them take action. In Brulles research and analysis he found that Scientific Publications and Magazines have the most effect on the general public. These factors are the main reasons why many millennials still don’t care about climate change as a real issue, because of the general public’s lack of self-urgency.
In the Article “Effects of Global Warming” by National Geographic. Many millennials know that temperatures are rising due to global warming but have no idea how it will affect them in the future. Some examples of global warmings effect on the planet is rising temperatures and rising sea levels. This can affect people in coastal regions such as California, south Africa, and many islands. An example is the Mariana islands are slowly sinking due to sea levels rising 7 to 23 inches by the end of the century. With rising temperatures means many animals will migrate north to chase cooler temperatures. This will cause many species to survive and thrive as well as many other species to go extinct. With many species going extinct polar bears are also endangered with many of their food sources and habitat disappearing. Also, Precipitation has increased over the decades due to global warming affecting many wildlife habitats resulting in many animals migrating into urban areas. Due to rising temperatures, many invasive species are taking over habitats destroying many species that affect our daily lives. An example is Alaska spruce trees are dying at an alarming rate due to insects chewing up spruce trees. Another example of how global warming is affecting us is that Hurricanes, tornadoes, and tropical storms. This can also affect coastal areas this can be seen within the past year with three hurricanes occurring continuously. This can also affect areas such as Oklahoma which already have a tendency of tornadoes. Less freshwater will also be available to certain regions of the world. For example, in Peru the Quelccaya ice caps are melting which can result in less drinking water and electricity by the year 2100. With the spread of water into urban areas will result in the spread of disease primarily malaria. Because mosquitos thrive in dirty or murky water the rise of water levels this will result in mosquito populations drastically increasing.
In the article “How global warming will Change the Earth” by NASA. Nasa gives multiple examples on how the earth will dramatically change in the future. Today there are only subtle changes to the environment making many millennials not realize the extreme magnitude of the issue. According to Nasa’s reports show that as the temperatures continue to rise there will less cool winds and more warm winds this will cause more flooding and precipitation. Hurricanes are also estimated to become stronger and occur more frequent than ever before. This can be seen today in 2017 with Hurricanes Katia, Irma, and Jose all arriving consecutively, this has never been seen before in weather patterns. But unfortunately, at the rate of climate change consecutive hurricanes will become a more frequent occurrence. The Rise in temperature has already started to affect many insects and animals. Nasa reports show that due to rising temperature bees are becoming confused on which season it is. Resulting in many bee’s not pollinating plants. This will ultimately result in many plants and ecosystems becoming extinct because of lack of vegetation. With fewer winter days less insects are being killed off during the winter resulting in many plants being over consumed affecting many food webs. As well as with more warmer days many plants can’t survive in rising temperatures causing them to die and will eventually cause many plant species to go extinct. Rising temperature and Sea levels will impact many people in the future. Nasa states that many coastal regions and regions that can’t adapt to the climate change will be affected the most. Many people in coastal regions will face property damage or loss due to rising sea levels. Also, as Temperatures rise people will start to fall victim to heat strokes more frequently. But in the midst of all the negative aspects of climate change there is a silver lining. Nasa reports that because growing seasons will become longer this will increase food production throughout the world.
In the article “Accelerating Extinction Risk from Climate Change” by Mark C. Urban. In the article Urban describes his in-depth analysis on how climate change is affect extinction rate around the globe. Urban researched more in depth on the topic of extinction than most environmentalists. Urban states that normal environmentalists don’t take in all the data or don’t conduct enough research to get a clear result. Environmentalists use factors such as population distribution and suitable habitats and their correlation in order to predict the rate of extinction. But Urban takes it a step further and analyzes Global temperatures increases, taxonomic groups, geographic regions, endemism, modeling techniques, dispersal assumptions, and extinction thresholds. Urban uses all of these factors and found how they correlate in order to get a deeper and clearer result on how climate change is affecting extinction rates globally. Urban also state that many environmentalists forget to include species interaction, dispersal difference, and evolution in their research giving them murky data. In Urbans research he found that climate change will not only increase extinction but accelerate it as well. He found that for every degree in temperature that the earth rises will result in a 5.2% acceleration of species extinction. As well as if the global temperature were to rise to 3 degrees Celsius will result in an 8.5% increase in acceleration of species extinction as well as that one and six species are threatened by climate change. Region is also another factor that affects extinction, according to Urban many studies produced by environmentalists have taken place in North America. The problem with the majority of research being conducted in North America. Is that North America has the lowest extinction rate of any other continent. Australia and New Zealand have the highest extinction rate of any continent on the planet, this is due to the many indigenous species and lack of land mass. Asia by a wide margin has done the least amount of research on species extinction than any other continent, with only four studies. Urbans emphasizes the importance of conducting extensive research in other places in order to get the bigger picture. All these factors play a role in species extinction but without proper research and data we will become extinct before we know it.
In the article “The top ten global warming ‘skeptics arguments answered” by Dana Nuccitelli. Nuccitelli in her article addresses many of the counter arguments posed by global warming skeptics. At the University of Alabama at Huntsville climate scientist Roy spencer argues against global warming stating that the earth has gone through a global warming before about 800 years ago. From this viewpoint that is solid evidence that global warming might not as permanent as many people believe it to be. Spencer’s credibility among the community gives him some ground too his opposing viewpoints. Another point by Spencer shows that there have been no recent warmings across the globe. This is displayed by spencer through evidence showing that temperatures have stopped rising throughout a 15-year time. Nuccitelli counter argues spencer’s argument by stating that Spencer was only measuring the earth’s surface temperature, which only accounts for about 2% of the earths global temperature. She also states that heat is accumulating at the rate of four Hiroshima atomic bombs per second. The counter argument and evidence shown by Nuccitelli against Spencer is very strong disproving spencer’s initial argument on global warming. Another Argument by Spencer is that global warming is so recent that we don’t know if it was natural or manmade. Spencer backs up his claim by stating that temperature detecting technology is not advanced enough yet to get the full picture of global warming. Nuccitelli counters spencer’s argument by showing a multitude of graphs and scientific accounts. Showing the difference between manmade effects on the earth compared to Natural warming. She states that the IPCC has confirmed with 95% confidence that global warming has been caused by mankind contributions since 1950. Many of the counter arguments against global warming are illogical and merely myths in order to gain the audience trusts and disprove many environmentalist’s data.
In Conclusion, Climate Change is a real issue across America. With more generations ignoring the current effects of climate change. Many millennials are taking action but it’s not enough to save the earth from the path that we are on now. People need to start making a change in lifestyle as well as governments need to make changes in order to preserve our environment. With populations rising and land mass decreasing we need to preserve the environment for as long as possible in order for humans to survive. Millennials need to start to take charge on climate change because you are the future and you will decide what happens to the earth and how it affects everyone on it.
