Soaring tuitions and student loan debt are placing higher education beyond the reach of many American students. It's time to make college free and accessible to all” (Keith Ellison).

The Importance of Higher Education

A college education has become a necessity in today’s society, but many middle class and underclass people cannot afford such costs. If the fees of college continues to increase then no one will be able to afford college. I believe college tuition should be provided and funded by the U.S. government. If the government were to pay for college it might help encourage students to work harder in school and focus on their studies and grades. Reasoning

Fifteen percent of high school graduates don’t enroll into college and won't go to college because they can't afford it and don't want to burden their families with debt. Debt from a student loan has become the largest form of personal debt in America. Student loan debt is very high and many students graduating have a difficult time finding jobs in their career fields to pay off their students loans. “Most who graduate do so with tens of thousands of dollars of debt, shackling them to creditors for decades and limiting their career options” ( Page and Clawson). In the past an advanced degree meant higher social status and economic stability, but presently college graduates find that student loan debt increases inequality. In most cases low income graduates find it harder to buy a house and start a family.

Many students want to get an education in the medical field, law, and education. These jobs require you to have an advanced degree, but the higher the degree the higher the price classes are. If the government were to invest money into paying college tuitions it would help educate and employ our country. “At the base of the debate about the cost of college is the question whether college is a private or a public benefit. A college degree increases lifetime earnings and provides better and more employment opportunities. But individuals are not the only ones who profit from College; the nation, and the states that compose it, benefit from a more skilled and educated workforce and the social mobility inherent within it” (Carol Christ). Students that graduate from college have been known to produce more economic activity, participate less in social welfare programs and produce more tax dollars.

Conclusion

Public university is meant for everyone, but only those who can afford the price can go, which means the government shouldn't call a university public when not all social classes can attend. Education is a key that unlocks the door to opportunities, I think more communities should step up and make education available to every student in our country.
