  1. Ability to customize
  2. Windows can be customized to a high extent. This is because windows allow user to pick and choose between Themes, colours, updates, programs (they can pick & chose to download), security and windows apps and some of the settings.

As Linux can use the interface CIS, it would mean that you would be able to rewrite the code for Linux. This means that Linux can be highly customized.

  3. Support for connectivity of portable media
  4. Windows supports connectivity for a wide range of media, such as USB drives, HDD/SSD Drives, CD/DVD’S, Bluetooth, WI-FI and other electronic devices which could be plugged into the computer system via USB. Linux does not have a lot of support for connectivity of other media/devices, this would mean that you would have to manually download the software for that specific media device or drivers to make sure that all devices can be used.

  5. Security
  6. Windows offers a high amount of security options, ranging from passwords (when you log in), admin rights to the computer system (e.g. windows would ask for a password before downloading a file/program), They preinstall antivirus software’s and utilities to regulate your computer system and scan for any harmful files (to ensure the well-being and efficiency of your computer system for a long period of time).

Linux offers the user to have an administrative password for logging in and carrying out various other processes, such as downloading programs/software onto your computer system. This would mean that you would require a password before downloading something, which would mean that it would be harder for harmful programs to enter and access your computer system. Also, due to Linux having CLI, you could code some security measures on your operating system, making the operating system more secure for you

  7. Stability and reliability
  8. Windows is very stable, due to the number of weekly updates which take place each week. And the utilities provided by the operating system ensure that the system works well and efficiently with the computer system, making the operating system very reliable. Not only that but, the operating system is able to resolve problems easily if there were a problem and is able to provide several resolutions for the user to choose (e.g. It would send a crash report to Microsoft).

The Linux operating system is stable, as Linux has been in use since 1991. This means that Linux has received a large amount of patches and updates to counter bugs and difficulties people may have had since its release, making it very stable and reliable.

  9. Ease of management
  10. Windows provides an easy to use GUI and provides tutorials and tips for when starting to use the operating system. Also, Windows is extremely popular, which means that many people would be able to use the operating system as they are familiar with the OS.

Since its release, Linux has received a variety of updates which have made the operating systems have a higher ease of management. Although if you wanted to alter something in CLI, you would need to have knowledge on programming languages/coding.

  11. Associated utilities
  12. Windows provides a lot of utilities to help manage the OS. They provide utilities such as OneDrive, OneNote, Calendar, Clock and alarm, WinRAR, etc.

Linux provides the basic utilities (e.g. Clock, Calendar, etc.), but you can easily download more utilities

  13. Cost
  14. The cost of Windows (10 – latest version) for the UK is £119.99. This is quite expensive but you could also buy product keys for a fraction of the price.

Linux can be downloaded onto a USB/disc for free as it is an open source software.

  15. Support for the user
  16. Windows provides users with a help section on the Microsoft website and there are computing forums (where you could talk to other people about how to solve a problem), they also have some troubleshooting processes which can take place if something is not working properly in your computer system.

For support you can either look online on the Linux website or you could seek help on the forums and blogs online, where there are programmers and Linux users which can help you.
