There are three regulatory approaches to ethics which has a strong connection to each other known as deontology; utilitarianism and virtue. Firstly, I’d like to start off with deontology which is based on whether an action itself is right or wrong under rules or doctrine no matter what the result is. One of the most significant philosophers known as Immanuel Kant articulated the most influential form of deontological moral theory in 1788. Kant’s deontological moral theory is based on how he views the human being as having a sense of rationality towards certain situations. Kant strongly believes that before any action takes place one must put aside their feelings, inclinations, and concerns because it shouldn’t be mixed with moral action. The influence of any action should be solely based on an obligation and must be well thought out. Also he believes people should be provided with a framework of rational rules which will help to guide and prevent certain actions, intentions, and desires.

For example: killing and stealing is considered wrong regardless of the reason or consequences. Secondly, to get a better understanding of deontology this theory can be compared to some opposing theories, such as virtue and utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is based on achieving the most positive outcome or consequences and not by right or wrong.

For example: killing or stealing is acceptable as long as it increases the well-being of a lot of people. For instance, if you reside in a community where the leader constantly rapes the young women and everyone is afraid to take a stand, and you take matters in your hand and kill that person. Consequently, it is considered utilitarianism, because you killed the leader to save the young women of the community. Utilitarianism is all about aiming at a goal which results in the greatest happiness or the best consequence, which in fact justifies any action that achieves that goal. An act is said to be morally bad but might unintentionally lead to a favorable good. But if it was deontology theory killing the leader would be wrong regardless of the reason or consequences. In this case, the right thing to do is call the police rather than to kill someone.
