Cubism was inspired by the late work of an artist named Paul Cézanne. Paul’s artwork started to show a slightly different take on art that people had previously done. Another artist that strongly influenced the cubist style was Pablo Picasso. Picasso was very much inspired by tribal African masks. The masks were not identical in the fact of realistic human features, however, were still recognised as a face.
The main cubist artists were: Pablo Picasso 1881-1973, George Braque 1882-1963, Juan Gris 1887-1927.
The basic ideas of cubism are to not use perspectives to form space and not use realistic modelling of figures. They allowed foreground to blend with the background and drew different sections of the art piece from various different angles.
Cubism has is drastically different and is a highly revolutionary style of modern art. It was to create the message that change is happening at alarming speeds and this idea was booted at the early 20th century. It was one of the first abstract art forms.
The purpose of this piece of artwork that Picasso painted, it to show himself as intelligent and shows him to look smart and composed. He is trying to show the best image of himself through a cubist portrait.
The impact this piece had was that it gave the viewer a good understanding of how Picasso saw himself through his own eyes and how he wanted to be seen by others.
There is no clear impact of this piece of art on others, however, I assume it was also quite influential to other artists as well as his other most famous revolutionary cubist artworks.
It influenced other aspiring artists who were interested and or have never heard of cubism on their own work. And it also had an impact on sending the message of the rapidly changing world around them.
I have learned that in Picasso’s self-portraits he likes to paint them in a way of showing his audience how he would like to be presented and also imply how fast the world is moving on while contained within a three-dimensional art piece.
The strengths within with piece of work created by Picasso would be, although not identical or realistic in human facial features, it is still easily distinguishable as a face and we get a good understanding of what he looked like within this cubist drawing.
The weaknesses in his work shown would be that, it is not fully cubist as compared to other artwork of the same genre, it is quite realistic in terms of facial features, depth and colour scheme.
In my opinion, I would say that with artwork is successful in the audience understanding the message he is putting across and how when analysed closely, you can understand how the artist sees himself as smart and well put together with his buttoned shirt and blazer.
