Although many men were taken away by force due to Conscription, it was a very necessary law. Do you think Canada could have become the nation that it is today without Consription? Conscription was necessary as without it, it would have been impossible for Canada to get enough personell to protect the British Empire, win the war and secure Canada’s freedom in the long run.First off, the government should use conscription, because for all the who had relatives sent over seas to fight in this war then all their hard work, effort and the money put into them would all be a waste of time and money. Canada sent over 500,000 soldiers to fight in the war and spent $1,665,576,000 on food, supplies, weapons, and equipment. Also, Conscription should be introduced because if we show that Canada can be independent and stand their own ground in this war then they can prove to the British that Canada can be independent so Canada would be able to gain Autonomy.
At the beginning of the war people voluntarily signed up for the war, it was a huge effort and sent over 500,000 people overseas but if we whos mans stop sending in help then all the soldiers that sacrificed their lives in the war would be wasted so we might as well end the war and win the war by sending more troops to support the British and gain our honor, and independence. Secondly, I think the government made the right choice to introduce conscription. Conscription was necessary because it was needed to win the war. With the lack of men on the battlefield, the front would not be able to hold off German attacks. They would not be able to replace the wounded or dead soldiers and as a result, they will lose their positions (ref. CSI Textbook pg. 8 charts). Once the trenches become breached, all soldiers would be in danger. Although Canada could contribute through by other means, men use weapons and they are what win wars.
At last, Conscription was necessary to honour the fallen soldiers. With conscription, the sacrifices of fallen soldiers will not be for nothing. It was also necessary to protect the British Empire. Canadians were known as shock troops as they were always in the front lines. Without the support of Canadian troops and other colonies, the British army would suffer greater casualties and slowly lose to attrition.
