At this stage in a pre-service teacher’s education, there are many theories that a successful teacher must be aware of for student’s success in education. Two theories that are proven effective in teachers are constructivist and sociocultural theories. A teacher that utilizes the concepts in each theory is more effective than one who focuses on only one. One vital focus that is integrated into these theories is for students to actively engage and understand concepts rather than tedious focus on procedures and lack of logical connections from prior knowledge to new ideas (Van De Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2010). In the assignment to watch four video clips from four different teachers, students in a K-12 setting are understanding concepts because these teachers are effectively implementing the core principles of each theory into their instruction.

In one particular video, students were engaged in an activity about the digestive system. The teacher asked questions regarding the observable outcomes of the experiment which involved a plastic bag, oil, etc. to mimic the actual digestive process in a human body. The result of this activity showed the constructivist theory by allowing students to make connections from their prior knowledge about food consumption and digestion to the results of their experiment. Also, the classroom’s social interaction in this activity allowed students with a higher zone of proximal development(ZPD) to assist those with lower ZPD through the inquiry-based instruction in class, which is an example of sociocultural theory (Van De Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2010). It was clear that students who are actively engaged in a lesson and make prior connections to new ideas can truly understand any concept. In another video, student’s mastery of government was present by their personal experience of a theatrical movie’s government to the story’s government read in class. This particular teacher had given more ideas to connect the lesson of government to students which significantly increases the student’s capability to understand the concept (Van De Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2010).

Through the assignments’ template, it is significantly clear and important to understand that all teachers were exemplars of effective teaching which has the effect of advancing a student by grade levels. Effective teachers are all of the following: motivators, tour guides, managers, and connectors. These characteristics should be demonstrated holistically every day in the classroom. A motivator instills the idea of success, motivation, and high expectations to all students. The tour guide encourages active engagement by hands-on activities that adhere to diverse modalities of instruction. A manager ensures that the classroom is safe and encourages learning with rules, consequences, and rewards. The connector makes sure that all students fully understand the concepts by making many prior knowledge connections to new ideas. These are the crucial concepts that I must understand and master for the sake of advancement in education in a micro and macro level.
