Good morning everyone! Today, I’m going to present my position paper entitled “Contraception is a Solution”. Different sexually transmitted diseases or (STD) spread faster nowadays and teenage pregnancies continuously increasing as well that lead to rapid increase of population. We all know that STD is a serious matter when you have it because it is hard to cure. Teenage pregnancy has many consequences and we are already overpopulated. Contraception is important to prevent early pregnancy and spreading of STD. “The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10354), also known as the Reproductive Health Law or RH Law, is a law in the Philippines, which guarantees universal access to methods on contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and maternal care”. If you get pregnant at your young age, then it will be hard for you to reach your dreams. 10 percent has begun childbearing while 8 percent are already mothers and another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child (National Demographic and Health Survey, NDHS, 2013). An unplanned pregnancy can make your life upside down especially when you are currently studying because your dreams will not be fulfilled (Ireland, 2017).
Instead of thinking what you are going to do about unplanned pregnancy, you can use contraceptives when you have sexual intercourse with someone. Using condom is a simplest way to prevent it but there are other instances that it is not effective because of its quality. However, there are other types of contraceptives for women such as pills, implant, and sterilization but pills is the most commonly used since this is much affordable to most of them. By doing this it will lead to less abortion. Teenage women who live in a simple life are more likely to abort the baby because of unplanned pregnancy, thinking that they will no longer finish their studies, reach their dreams, and face more challenges and heavy responsibilities when they bear child. Poor Filipino women are significantly more likely than rich one to use riskier methods of abortion. An estimated 22% of poor Filipino women used a catheter or heavy abdominal pressure in an abortion attempt, while no rich women resorted to such methods. Moreover, poor women were far less likely to use safer methods, such as dilation and curettage or manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) than the rich which is 13 and 55 percent respectively (National Abortion Study, 2004). Another, we are already overpopulated with an estimated global population of over 7.2 billion people.
The global population is expected grow to 9.6 billion by 2050 and 10.9 billion by 2100 (United Nation, 2013). Efforts to control fertility improve maternal and child health and welfare, while also conserving natural resources. There is a problem about the limited natural resources that will no longer be able to keep up with increasing demands. Since Philippines is a third world country, it is hard for the government to sustain the needs of every family because of the population. The population of the Philippines has been steadily growing for many years. It is the 12th most populated country in the world, and grew at a rate of 1.72% between 2010 and 2015 (2015 census results). The population in 2016 in the Philippines was 100,981,437.
The 2018 population is 106.51 million (United Nation, 2018). Population in the Philippines is expected to reach around 107.19 million by December 31, 2018 (Commission on Population, PopCom). Family planning is important, contraception is an easy and direct method of reducing population growth that can also help reduce poverty. And last, if we use contraceptives particularly condom, we will prevent ourselves from aquiring sexually transmitted infections. They are very effective in preventing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and many other sexually transmitted diseases when used the right way every time. HIV attacks the body’s immune system, reduces the number of CD4 cells or T cells in the body, which help the immune system fight off infections. If untreated, it makes the person more likely to get other infections or cancers. “HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease.
These opportunistic infections or cancers take advantage of a very weak immune system and signal that the person has acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS, the last stage of HIV infection” (SMAIF, 2017). The human body can’t get rid of HIV completely, even with treatment. So once you get HIV, you have it for life. Condoms may prevent the spread of other STDs, like the Human Papillomavirus (HPV, genital or venereal warts) or genital herpes. Some STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis are spread the same way as HIV. Studies show that female condoms are as effective at protecting against HIV as male condoms. Female condoms are made of nitrile, which is an effective barrier to HIV. It is important to use these to prevent ourselves from getting different sexually transmitted infection or STI. Contraception prevents many consequences and is a solution to what we are facing today. We should be aware of these, it is not only you who will benefit to these but others as well.
