On this date in 1985, DANIELLE DAX released her debut single, YUMMER YUMMER MAN, (October 11th, 1985). Emerging from the brilliantly experimental ruins of the Lemon Kittens, Danielle’s solitary excursions saw her playful marry music, art and theatre, Her jumping bean of a voice striking a heady invocation of ceremonial chants in some exotic wasteland. The wiry band carved out tribal rituals and folk hymns, all intricately ornamented, like a run of stomp dances. She swells and shakes the notes until they froth like a bedlamite, an encouraging attack of vertigo all round. “I have my social life in my dreams,” explained Danielle. “I have really good adventures.

The other night someone was teaching me how to be a Rolling Stones groupie – how you could steal from the dressing rooms, what was worth having and what wasn’t. And another one – someone had invited William Burroughs to a party to criticise my lyrics constructively…. and all things like this! I wake up and my normal life seems really boring – I have to pay the phone bills and go to Tescos. ”Dax’s debut album, the quietly successful POP-EYES on which she played all the instruments herself, was released in 1983 and was followed a year later by a second, JESUS EGG THAT WEPT. Matching the avant-garde output was her striking fashion. She liked to paint on her clothes but also designed stage sets, experiment with photography, and collected bizarre old instruments of varying ethnic origin. “I thought I was going to be a graphic designer or something, and my mum was a dress designer, albeit a not terribly adventurous one. I mean – I hate pretension. My presentation is ultra-kitsch, it’s a parody. I can’t imagine going through life without a sense of humour. Being too introspective causes depression. People would go batty without entertainment.

However, she was tired by the music papers who painted her as an escapist pixie forever frollicking with wizards and hobgoblins. “I don’t think I’m the slightest bit weird. Some want to see you as that, want to feel protective about you and, if you’re not, it spoils it for them” said Danielle. “I do have extreme areas of vulnerability but I’d never talk about them. I’m very suspicious of people who make out they’re weird, cos usually they haven’t got a clue. If they’re detached and objective enough to use it, it means they’re not in the first place. ”Experimental performance art has remained her guiding force and throughout the late 80s/early 90s she garnered radio play on alternative stations with tracks like ‘Big Hollow Man’, ‘Cat House’, and ‘The Id Parade’. Today, she “continues designing, painting and music making at her home in London were she lives with her husband Adrian and four cats.
