Documentary Topic Proposal

The documentary’s purpose and argument is to provide ideas that help relieve the adverse effects that technology addiction has on children and how to reverse the societal and familial effects that technology may have on a person.

The documentary’s purpose of view is to remain as professional as possible and provide an unbiased and untainted view of some of the adverse effects of technology on an adolescent’s life.

Although these can be slightly opinionated, all claims made in the documentary will be solidified with statistics from credible authorities on this topic. We will incorporate all the appeals through the numerous interviews with backed-up claims. By interviewing people who are constantly fighting against the ever-growing threat of technology to children’s development, we will gain an insight into the fight and how exactly steps will be taken to alleviate those stresses. This will help illustrate the documentary as credible to the audience; creating a rapport which is extremely important for the audience to adopt the theme inherent in the documentary. We will include rhetorical strategies in the diction of the documentary. We will include compare and contrast stories to make our argument impervious to a counter-argument. This means that we will include stories about people who have used technology to become better and others who believe that technology is inadvertently hurting their development. By including both sides of the story, we hope to make our documentary more balanced and credible. The structure of the document is easy to understand. We will introduce the topic at hand at the beginning because we feel that the audience’s attention is strongest at the beginning and will serve as a good precedent for the rest of the documentary. Then in the middle of the documentary, we will use first person-evidence such as interviews and the appropriate statistics to support those claims.

Lastly, in the end of the documentary we will restate the thesis argument from the beginning of the argument again at the end. What this does is that it revives the main argument of the documentary in case the audience forgets or simply loses interest. By reviving their interest, it’s more likely to hold their attention long after the documentary is over and continue to ponder on the idea presented in the documentary. The documentary will primarily just present the argument but with the several interjections such as the personal interviews and the statistics; we hope that the documentary will pose a story to the audience about a story that has touched many of us. In all documentaries, the tone is primarily professional and unbiased. Despite our strong position against the adverse effects that technology can have on families and children, we believe that excessive emotion with empty conviction can simply cloud our message.

Through carefully placed interviews and messages, we hope to convey our strong passion for the subject but still projecting our message to touch our audience. We believe that it’s better to touch the audience for a prolonged period of time with a clear message than having excessive emotion but it not really touching the audience and informing them about the severity of the issue. The music and sound effects that we will use will be primarily foreboding, serious music. We will use a mixture of instrumental music like orchestral music and techno music to show the progression of the U.S. economy into the future but still paying homage to the roots which made America, a global superpower.

Some cinematics techniques we plan to use is raw footage because we want to make sure that the emotions of the interviewees are clearly portrayed without unnecessary obstruction. We also plan to use scripted reenactments to add to the overall content of the documentary. Charts and figures will also be prominently used in the documentary to make sure that the claims made in the documentary are credible and being adequately supported. This will help develop a much-needed rapport with the audience.
