If you are thinking about investing in a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you may feel overwhelmed that there is a good deal of information to consider in. You might find yourself confused by all the technical jargon or how it really works. You will probably have noticed that different VPNs have different protocols, which may be a little difficult for your VPN novice to digest. If you choose a VPN, it is very important to consider the various aspects of these technologies to choose which will best suit your needs. Here’s a (hopefully approachable) breakdown of those differences on VPN protocols.

Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol is the most frequent VPN protocol. It is widely supported for Windows users, as it was made by Microsoft. It is available as standard on just about every single VPN platform, which makes it easy to set up. It also requires a low computational overhead to execute, which means (for you VPN novices) which it is also fast to set up.

On the other hand, the PPTP was developed using 128-bit encryption keys that has since become considered very weak in our fast advancing electronic world. Since there are some security vulnerabilities on this protocol, most of today’s VPNs use a 256-bit security protection.L2TPLayer 2 Tunnelling Protocol does not offer encryption and relies on PPP (Point-to-Point protocol) to encrypt. The difference between PPTP and L2TP is that L2TP provides data confidentiality and data integrity. L2TP was built by Microsoft using Cisco as a base of PPTP and L2F (Layer 2 Forwarding) combined.

This VPN protocol is created to work with modern operating systems and VPN devices. It’s also effortless to set up. When there are problems that may arise, this tech uses UDP port 500, which may be obstructed by NAT firewalls.L2TP/IPsec encapsulates information twice, and that may compromise speed, however as encryption/decryption happens in the kernel and L2TP/IPsec, it enables multi-threading (OpenVPN does not), and as a result, it is faster.

OpenVPN is a somewhat new VPN protocol technologies, and one large advantage is the fact that it’s highly configurable and can easily bypass firewalls. It runs best on a UDP interface and may be set to operate on any interface. It uses 128-bit block size as opposed to Blowfish’s 64-bit block size, so it is able to handle bigger files better.

The performance speed does depend on the level of encryption employed. What’s more, it has come to be the default VPN link type, though it requires third-party software support. It’s also little difficult to set up that may be frustrating for the new VPN user.IKEv2Internet Key Exchange (version 2) is a IPSec based tunnelling protocol which was developed by Microsoft and Cisco. IKEv2 is great at re-establishing a VPN link when users lose their internet connections.

Mobile users benefit from using IKEv2 VPN protocol because of its support for your Mobility and Multi-homing (MOBIKE) protocol, which is useful if you would like to connect your phones to your own Wi-Fi system while in the home but switch to cellular data use when out and about.IKEv2 is faster than PPTP and L2TP, as it does not use the overhead associated with Point-to-Point protocols (PPP). Stable and secure, easy to set up, and fully supportive of iOS, macOS, and Windows mobile devices, IKEv2 is available for Android devices but requires a link using a third party program.
